The Holiday Wrap is taking a look at some of the biggest artists of 2010. Whether they were California Gurls, The Only Girl in the World or love you Just The Way You Are, this year we saw some incredible artists take over. Today we look at Bruno Mars!
1. He is a teaser
Oh Bruno Mars, you definitely know how to make us blush! At the beginning of the year he appeared alongside B.O.B in the smash number one hit single ‘Nothin’ On You’, making all the ladies feel extra special. Everyone started to wonder about this Bruno Mars character… who is this guy with the voice of an angel? He later appeared alongside Travie McCoy on his debut single ‘Billionaire.’ Finally, in the fall of 2010, fans got the whole she-bang; a full album from Mars,
2. Testing the skills
On May 11, 2010, Bruno Mars released an extended play (EP) for digital download called ‘It’s Better If You Don’t Understand.’ The EP included four tracks, all produced by The Smeezingtons, a production and writing trio consisting of Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, and Ari Levine. Mars received positive feedback from his fellow colleagues in the industry for the EP, leading way to his debut album.
3. Cocaine scandal
I hate to bring it up but yes, that smiley mug shot is our own Bruno Mars. About a month before the release of his debut album, Mars was arrested in Las Vegas for possession of cocaine. The incident has been kept hush hush for the time being, but Mars still has to attend a court date, which has been postponed for the second time until early next year.
4. Releasing a debut album
There are finally songs that we can call his! Before dropping Doo-Wops and Hooligans, the lead single ‘Just the Way You Are’ was released along with a romantic music video that was cleverly shot with the use of tape cassettes. His second single, ‘Grenade’, blew up the charts as soon as it was released.
5. Appearing and performing at award shows
Bruno Mars performed a medley of ‘Nothin’ On You’ and ‘Airplanes’ with B.O.B and Hayley Williams of Paramore at the MTV VMAs in 2010. This performance became an immediate highlight of the night as the two successful hits were brought together. Glee would have been proud.
6. Time to open the show
After performing here and there, Bruno Mars was ready to take the road. He served as an opening act for Maroon 5 and One Republic over the span of eight days. Next up was supporting Travie McCoy for his European tour.
7. Touring
Bruno completed a solo mini tour around the United States before heading back home to Hawaii for a homecoming concert. As of now, there are a few scheduled dates in 2011 for Europe, but fans across the pond are still hoping for a North American tour.
8. First time performing in Canada
Bruno Mars managed to squeeze in Toronto for an all-too-brief concert at the Kool Haus on November 13, 2010. The sold out show was jam packed with opening acts such as Danny Fernandez, Blake McGrath, and JRDN. Bruno Mars closed the show by serenading the crowd of mostly screaming ladies. The well-received love should be enough to encourage him back to Canada.
9. Glee covers
You know you’re big when Glee deems you worthy to be covered! In episode eight of season two, ‘Marry You’ and ‘Just the Way You Are’ by Bruno Mars were covered by the cast, putting Mars in the same category as Florence and the Machine, Britney Spears, REM, Jon Bon Jovi and The Beatles.
10. Grammy nods
Okay, not even one complete year of being a solo artist and he is already up for seven Grammies?! He is just one spot behind Eminem for the most received nominations. Impressive, Bruno Mars, very impressive! These nominations include Record of the Year for ‘Nothin’ On You’, ‘F*ck You!’ (which he co-wrote) and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for ‘Just the Way You Are.’ The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will be on your TV screens on February 13, 2011.
