Fresh off last summer’s box office hit, The Avengers, Robert Downey Jr. is back as Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man. Returning for the third film in the franchise is Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes. Joining the cast are Rebecca Hall as scientist Maya Hansen and Ben Kingsley as the latest villain, known as The Mandarin. Directed by Shane Black, the film will be released on May 3, 2013.
If the trailer is any indication of the film, it’s going for a more serious Christopher Nolan-esque tone. I find that more appealing than the light comic feel of most Marvel films. I’m not dismissing that formula, which worked perfectly for The Avengers. But Nolan’s Batman trilogy proved that realism and a darker tone can work in superhero movies. I wasn’t a big fan of the previous Iron Man films, but this trailer has definitely got my interest.
The trailer was released by Yahoo! Canada today. Check it out below.
The official synopsis:
When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
