Contrary to popular belief, or what my pal (and former MuchMusic.com teamster) Justin thinks, I do (on occasion!) listen to music that doesn’t hail from the UK and isn’t hyped by music blogs. I have my own guilty pleasures, and there are a lot of them - I fall for the same overmarketed, glossy junk that the rest of you do. These songs hits number one for a reason, and that’s because they’re impossibly catchy and beg repeat listens.

Here’s a list of 25 singles released in 2008 that I listened to incessantly. And by incessantly I mean that I must have played each of these songs at least a hundred times. They’re divided somewhat into two categories - first, the songs that were inescapable if you turned on a radio, the TV or walked into HMV or Abercrombie, aka:

  1. I never understood the concept behind the term “guilty pleasure” - I like Nickelback more than Radiohead, and don’t feel guilty about it at all.

As for catchy tunes that were stuck in my head last year, here’s a handful:

    - The Wombats “Let’s Dance to Joy Division”

    - Matt Mays + El Torpedo “Building a Boat”

    - Vampire Weekend “A-Punk”

    - Butch Walker “The Weight of Her”

    - The Waking Eyes “All Empires Fall”

  2. ESCAPE THE FATE

    -numba1 band.

  3. Dan, you’re stronger than most of us. I think they’re “guilty” cause we don’t want to admit we like the stuff to most people. For instance, I listen to way too much Pussycat Dolls for anybody’s liking … and now I will be firmly judged.

  4. Wendy, I am judging you on teh internets! LULZORZ

  5. i agree with dan. when it comes to music, i like what i like. i dont ask other people to like it and i dont care if other people judge me based on it. if they do, theyre stupid. for me, listening to music is a personal experience. when i have my headphones on, what i’m listening to is my business and only my business. i fell like someone going through my ipod is as invasive as someone going through my underwear drawer. whats there is no ones business.

  6. Yes Dan! Good call on Building A Boat by Matt Mays + El Torpedo. Excellent song and video. I’m gonna listen to it right now!

  7. White Lies! White Lies! Great band.
