So anyway, I am almost fully recovered from the absolutely fantabulous rock spectacle that was The Darkness. That concert was all about love, ridiculous outfits and really freakin’ loud guitars. What more can you ask for? I’ll tell you: nothing. They rule.
In other news, I’ve been reading a lot about a company called BigChampagne. Wired Magazine had a big article about them recently… The company specializes in providing record labels with filesharing statistics so that the labels can try to get more radio spins of a particular song in markets where a lot of people are downloading that song.
Why is that interesting? Well, it means that while the labels are clearly suffering from all the filesharing going on, they’re managing to turn it around a bit and are using the filesharers as marketing tools. More good news: the privacy of individual filesharers seems to be relatively secure - exactly who you are isn’t released to the labels along with the stats, so no worries there.
So here’s the bottom line, as I see it - filesharing is here to stay, but it’s all about how you spin it. If the labels can find a way to make all that info floating around useful for themselves, the benefit of that might outweigh the damage that’s being done…somewhat…maybe.
In any case, I should point out that I’m totally kicking myself about all this - why I couldn’t have come up with a brilliant idea like BigChampagne’s myself and lived a life of carefree luxury is something I will never understand. I was born like 5 years too late. Grrrrrrrr.
Jenn, what are you sayin’?
