Mix Tape à la Wendy

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

This exercise turned out to be more fun than I imagined! I even LIKED (and made a note of) some of the stuff that I had never heard, and a few of Wendy’s songs really surprised me! Here’s her shuffle playlist:

1. Interpol - Evil
2. OutKast - Spottieottiedopalicious
3. Mungo Santamaria - Watermelon Man
4. David Holmes - Rip Rip**
5. The Roots - Rock You
6. LL Cool J - Around The Way Girl
7. Eric B. And Rakim - Paid In Full
8. Metric - Soft Rock Star (jimmy vs. joe mix) (sidenote –> this exact song came on as Metric walked into the studio to do their interview on Videoflow, no joke!)
9. Malcolm McLaren - About Her
10. Nelly Furtado - Baby Girl

** My favourite

Rrrrr….Ka-BAM!

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

That's it. I'm leaving.

Metric just came through for a little 2 on 1 with Devon (I have fallen in extreme like with them in the past few months, a little late, I know). After I took a few pics, I sat down and everyone was like, “WATCH YOUR BACK!” and I heard this mega KABOOM behind me. It was Lyn-Z, one of the skateboarders who’ll be dropping by on MOD today, jumping the stairs. Everyone was like, “take a picture!” so I totally did. I wish I could board. I’m rad in Tony Hawk, but that doesn’t really count.

Pimp Your Sneakers

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

So, I just about EXPLODED a moment ago while updating RapCity’s hip-hop listings when I came across a listing for Sneaker Pimps, one of my favourite trip-hop acts, ever, who I was quite coincidentally listening to but one hour ago on my iPod! According to the listing, SP would be making three Canadian pitstops, one in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.

I promptly IMed a dozen of my friends to share the great news before realizing that the chances that RapCity was promoting a late 90s/early 00s trip-hop act would be a bit peculiar.

So I did a little more research and discovered that the actual listing is for THE Sneaker Pimps, a SHOE exhibition that is currently making its way across North America.

Ah, drats. At least Wendy has something to be excited about!

Ms. Ehm

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

ehm_bono.jpgOn my daily visit over at Wikipedia, I came across the entry for MuchMusic. One click led to another, and the next thing I knew I was on Erica Ehm’s own website. For those of you who don’t know, Erica Ehm was *the* It Girl at Much in the 80s and 90s.

If you look at the “timeline” on the bottom you’ll uncover a veritable goldmine of nostalgic photos of Ms. Ehm with different TV personalities and musicians. My favourite is this pic of Erica with Bono, back when he was spotted in public not wearing pastel-tinted shades, and apparently before he had a (hair) stylist, either.

Who Said Rappers Can’t Act?

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Contact Music features King magazine’s list of the ten worst performances by a rap artist in a movie.

I will reluctantly admit to having seen exactly ONE of these movies and it’s probably the absolute worst of the bunch - Leprauchan 5: Leprachaun In The Hood, and in my opinion Coolio deserves a spot on this list just as much as Ice-T.

Who Will Be The Next Arcade Fire?

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

Over at Brooklyn Vegan (and now For The Records), there’s a panoply of speculated contenders including Stars, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Wintersleep and Wolf Parade (my personal choice). Someone should get a pool going on this.

America’s Next Top Over-Privileged Whiner

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

nicole.jpgSo on last night’s season premiere of America’s Next Top Model, favourites to take home the prize were decided pretty quickly. Interestingly, my two picks, Jayla and Lisa, weren’t who I had originally picked based on their model profiles on the official ANTM site. But they were stunning in 3D. Naturally, when it came time to make our selections in the office ANTM pool, my name was picked last and I was left with my absolute dead last choice, otherwise known as Nicole. Grr.

cassandra.jpgWhile there were many quotables from last night’s episode (among them, “1 down, 11 to go” and “Don’t get it twisted!”), Cassandra’s comment about how not everyone being as wonderfully gifted and privileged as her was the worst. Between Nicole and Cassandra’s whining, I think this is going to incredibly rantworthy. Who will be crowned America’s Whiniest Top Model Wannabe?

Encore

Wednesday, September 21st, 2005

So last night at the Annie/Röyksopp show, Röyksopp disappointed me a tad when they didn’t play my favourite song to hear performed live, “So Easy”. It’s a deep bass thumping song that sort of spooks you and it’s fantastic to dance to. I thought they might play it as part of their encore, but they didn’t. As the hordes at the back of the room started piling out of the Opera House after the lights went up, I left feeling a little cheated.

Imagine my surprise (and anger) today when I learned that they had in fact played a SECOND encore, after the lights went up, and So Easy was part of that set! Grr!

Since nowadays most encores aren’t impromptu the way they once were, but in fact planned out with the rest of the setlist, what’s an appropriate length of time to wait before coming back on stage to belt out a few more tunes? And how many encores is too many (I’ve seen as many as three)?
