2007 & 2008 Movie Blitz!

February 19th, 2008

idrinkyourmilkshake.jpgThis weekend when a friend asked me to go see a movie, it occurred to me that I had already seen everything (good) that was playing at major theatres. Usually this close to Oscars time every year I’m totally clueless and haven’t seen even half of the best picture contenders, but this time ’round I’m well prepared (to win the annual Oscar pool). I still have to watch Away From Her, but every time I try to start, I get depressed and change my mind.

Now this is just my personal opinion, but here are my ratings for these new movies, from best to most disappointing - and I say most disappointing because the bottom five movies were HIGHLY recommended to me by Metacritic & Rotten Tomatoes. Not to mention the fact that people won’t shut up about one of them, another has a 99 rating and 100% scores from every critic walking this planet, and yet another is directed by one of three famous people I’d invite to a dinner party. Their corresponding Metacritic score at the time of posting is in brackets next to my foul rating.

Keep in mind the way that Metacritic scores work - for example, a rating of 80 means everyone LOVED it, 20 means everyone thought it was HORRIFIC, and 40-60 means an equal number loved or hated it.

I’m going to wager that Soja’s list will be in the polar opposite order, as we seem to have inverse taste in movies (see also: Once, Me, You & Everyone We Know).

16 Movies I’ve Seen Recently, In Order Of Enjoyment:

There Will Be Blood - 10/10 (Metacritic Score: 92)
Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead - 9/10 (Metacritic Score: 84)
Gone Baby Gone - 9/10 (Metacritic Score: 72)

Juno - 7/10 (Metacritic Score: 81)

  1. wow - you’ve seen WAY more movies than me, but yes, ‘Once’ and ‘Me, You & Everyone We Know’ are great movies. And I thought ‘No Country For Old Men’ was better than ‘There Will Be Blood,’ and therefore it will take home Best Picture.

    I’m always right.

  2. Dang. How did you see Be Kind Rewind already?
