2007 Wrap-Up: Songs We Had On Repeat

Let’s face it, the songs you find yourself listening to incessantly aren’t necessarily the best of the year - sometimes they are, but most often, they’re just poppy pleasures that make your day a little brighter. And isn’t that what music should do? The answer is yes.

In no particular order, here are the songs with play counts well into the hundreds for me in 2007!

R. Kelly vs Broken Social Scene - I’m A Flirt/Shoreline
The probable winner for my most-played tune of the year .. and it’s a MASH-UP! Just goes to show how a well-done remix can be so infectious.

Feist - 1,2,3,4
Before an iPod ad made her a sensation, this became my perfect everyday happy tune. Even better for flying, as I found out on vacation in May - goes so well with soaring through the clouds!

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black//Valerie
The whole album is a raw display of heartache, but “Back To Black” is the ultimate showcase of hurt. It’s in her voice, and it’s beautiful. And “Valerie” (not on the album) - well, I just can’t get enough (especially the Mark Ronson Baby J remix)!

Rihanna - Umbrella
Not gonna lie, I had the entire album on repeat - but this is the song that started it. The raw drum track, the addictive melody and of course, the way um-ba-rella rolls off RiRi’s tongue - it’s too perfect pop!

M.I.A. - Paper Planes
One of the few songs on Kala that is more melody than beats, and it just sounds so GOOD.

Justin Timberlake - Lovestoned/I Think That She Knows
When part two kicks in, the world stops. Also, it’s been my ringtone for almost all of 2007, so my world stops a lot.

Kanye West - Good Life
To be quite honest, I wasn’t really feeling this song when I first heard it. Then I saw the amazing video, and I had to give it a second chance. Now you can’t get me to shut up - “and now my grandmama ain’t the only girl callin’ me baaaaybeh!”

Lily Allen - Everything Is Wonderful
Don’t let the optimistic music fool you, this song is all about being a cynic. Plus it’s got the lyric “I wanna be able to eat spaghetti bolognese and not feel bad about it for days and days and days”, which for me, means Lily wins at life.

Kate Nash - Merry Happy
The perfect ender for Kate’s album, with the “do do do”s and the sweet piano slowdown at the end … a sleeper favourite for me, but came up big later in the fall.

Bat For Lashes - What’s A Girl To Do
Not only is the video possibly the best of the year, but the song has a 60’s “Be My Baby” vibe mixed with a healthy dose of doom that is just awesome.

The Coasters - Down In Mexico
Yeah, so maybe this song is super old, but it was on the Death Proof soundtrack, and I heard it for the first time this year. There’s something very sexy about it, but maybe it was just the lapdance scene that accompanied it in the movie? Whatever. I was all over it.
