2007 Wrap-Up: The Best & Worst Chocolate Bars

December 31st, 2007

Earlier this month I went to a house party, and at around 3am during said house party a friend went on a snack run - she came back with a Bounty bar. I was outraged - I said to her: “Of all the confectionaries you could choose from, Bounty is the one you picked? I can name 50 chocolate bars right now that are better than Bounty!” and proceeded to make the list (keep in mind this is my personal list of faves).

In the week that followed I relentlessly pursued my hypothesis that Bounty was among the worst chocolate bars ever created. I queried my friends, I posted Facebook surveys, I even interviewed store clerks (for the record, they listed Snickers & Kit Kat as the most purchased chocolate bars, and Bounty & Eat More as the least popular). I wanted to perform a test with as little bias as possible.

Here at MuchMusic.com we conducted a blind chocolate bar taste testing of sorts - 40 chocolate bars, cut up into chunks and labelled in cups. Wendy and I searched high and low for the most obscure chocolate bars, and naturally included all of the basic Halloween ones. Each person had to try a piece, rate it from 0-5 and identify it from the list of chocolate bars (Dan and Neil correctly identified the most bars).

The top 3, based on scores highest to lowest:
Twix
Snickers
Crispy Crunch (I was surprised by this one!)

Following closely behind: Mars, Kit Kat, Coffee Crisp, Caramilk, Skor

The bottom 3, based on scores lowest to highest:
Look!
Payday
Eat More

Following closely behind: 100 Grand, Big Turk, Curly Wurly, Crunchie, Whatchamacallit

So yeah…apologies to my friend Jen B. for being so harsh about Bounty. It isn’t in the bottom 3. In fact, it’s not even in the bottom 10 (it’s the 13th worst). But that doesn’t mean I don’t still hate it!

  1. you really did find some obscure candy bars! i haven’t even heard of a few of those.

at halloween i always dig through the box to find the coffee crisps. cookies and cream bars are up there too.

does anyone remember time out bars?

  2. wunderbar rules!

  3. Where was wonderbar on your list. cause that bar is the shit

  4. Would you believe that before this challenge I had never had a Wunderbar??? And I freaking loved it when I tried it. Super tasty. But my absolute fave is After Eight - I’m a sucker for chocolate + mint.

  5. I agree that Crispy Crunch doesn’t get the respect it deserves. My favourite are the British chocolate bars: Yorkie, Double Decker, Curly Wurly, Swirl, etc..

  6. I feel this blog post is quite misleading given recent developments in candy creations; Lest we forget the famed “La Suisse” chocolate bar courtesy of our good friends at President’s Choice which has revolutionized the industry.

This bar puts the holiday favorite “Toblerone” to shame. The sheer multitude of nougat chunks coupled with the smooth towers of rich swiss chocolate make this bar the clear cut winner in any candy bar lineup, including the above.

I would appreciate a follow-up post detailing the benefits of consuming La Suisse, as well as a rematch between your top three and La Suisse.

I would propose the event be a mini olympics of chocolate supremacy with several events including, but not limited to:

    - an obvious blind taste test

    - a melting point test to see which bar better handles heat

    - possibly a test where each bar is hammered out, and the one with the largest surface area is the winner

    - a survival contest, whereby the bar would be tossed at a would-be assailant to determine which product would be most helpful in a dangerous situation

    - any other contests deemed necessary by a judging committee made up of swiss, belgian, and brazilian dignitaries.

    That is all for now.

  7. I can’t say i disagree with Matt on any of his points. A late contender in this great chocolate debate could spell disaster for the current winners… maybe there’s room for a reality show of some sort here. The world’s next top chocolate bar. Bars being voted off would face consumption by Neil.

  8. I LOVE MARS! Mars is the most delicious chocolate bar out there. It literally is comfort food for me. That creamy caramel taste. Hmmmmmm…..yum! Hershey’s Cookies and cream and Caramilk are great, too. Rolo is also one of the best. Yeah, and mint chocolate is also really good. Same for British chocolate.

But nothing can beat Mars for me. lol :)

  9. where is aero on that list?

my personal favorites are aero, twix and toblerone (the beige package). never heard of suisse. how can it be better then toblerone?

  11. barbarelle:

Beige or yellow packaging aside, Toblerone is an inferior product.

  12. id like to post a comment in regards to matthew’s post….matt, ur mind is fucked…i cant even further elaborate on that…thats the only way to describe it

    your good buddy

    the goat

  13. As a participant in the original discussion (and reasonably fervent Bounty fan) I’m rather pleased with these results, though a bit disappointed that I’m only finding out about them now.

Also, in future you might want to use lab coats for extra credibility.
