Matte was by his lonesome for most of MOD today, and with many guests scheduled, he had a full plate - but he managed just fine with the serious chatfest that erupted.
First Dave from Tokyo Police Club walked onto the set speaking about bathrooms and blogs…

…followed by Angels & Airwaves, cracking the odd smile but mostly gettin’ all political and stuff. Go Obama!

If you’re a girl or boy who likes kissing girls, or more specifically would like to kiss Katy Perry, then, well, you can be creepy and at least kiss a 12-inch tall version of her.
She now comes in doll form for the “low” price of $49.99 from (ironically named?) Integrity Toys. But hurry - it’s a (dust-) collector’s item, so there aren’t that many available.

In a world where High School Musicals rule the most desirable demographic, it only makes sense that Fame, the lovable Oscar-winning movie from the 80s that spawned many a spin-off, is reportedly getting an official remake.
OK, yes, as evidence from my discontinued items post, I am currently going through a nostalgic period in my life, so this Fame news might be more exciting for me than for some others, but c’mon - who hasn’t dreamed of going to a prestigious art school, to sing and dance and play numerous instruments, to live, to love, to learn… (Don’t you judge me!)
Here are the deets of the remake: it is set to star Thomas Dekker (pictured), that kid from Heroes and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and will be directed by choreographer Kevin Tancharoen who has worked on many a music video and on MTV’s DanceLife.
This has cheeseball potential written all over it and I for one am saddened that I have to wait a whole year for this to hit the screen. But this is my favourite part: kids from around the world are posting auditions for this remake all over YouTube. They range from decent to god-awful, but definitely worth searching for - I definitely had a few LOL moments.
But before you do that, to get you in the mood, here is the original 1980 teaser trailer:
PS: Speaking of Thomas Dekker, he also has a MySpace page where he showcases his self-made music. It’s definitely, um, interesting.

When I signed out of my hotmail account today (what? personal email at work? Ssshhhh), I spotted a little slideshow on the MSN page that was all about discontinued items that people would like to see, well, continued. Their list ranged from the great (McDonald’s Pizza, the first Nintendo, Crystal Pepsi), to the curious (the DeLorean DMC-12) to the awful (Olive Garden, Simpson’s department stores).
I thought to myself, “Surely there are more products out there that are long gone that I simply can’t live without.” So I started asking around to my MuchMusic.com co-workers and what erupted was a cacophony of nostalgic excitement that resulted in a breakdown of communication to Kat stating she’ll now make friendship pins for everyone just like she did when she was in Grade 6.
Regardless, I few stand-out long-gone products were voiced and here are the 4 best:
Franken Berry Cereal - the delicious strawberry-flavoured brother to Count Chocula. You can still snag a box or two in some novelty shops, but it seemed to have disappeared off Canadian shelves ages ago. Why? WHY?! (Well, other than the fact that the dye used in the cereal would turn your feces pink, or simply it made your innards bleed - not sure).
Bonkers - The precursor to the inferior Starburst, this chewy fruit-flavoured candy would cause giant pieces of fruit to fall from above, resulting in uproarious laughter. Oh wait - that was just in those creepy 80s commercials.
Jem/He-Man/She-Ra - New episodes of all of these shows are needed. Pronto. They were nonsensical yet they blew my mind. If new episodes started playing, I’d actually get up on Sunday mornings instead of the usual sleeping in til 1pm. (Or I’d at least set my PVR).
Jello Pudding Shaker - This thing was the bomb. You’d add your ingredients, shake, let sit for a few minutes and then serve. Then Bill Cosby would come in and offer me a soda pop. It was the only way I’d eat my pudding.
Honorable mentions - Popples, Boglins, Intellivision, Dweebs, chicken-flavoured Zoodles, and Choclair (both the chocolate bar and the wrapper rapper).
What would you add to this list?

A summer soundtrack.
There’s always that one song or maybe a new band you discover that get’s you through those hot, hazy summer days. UK foursome SPC ECO (pronounced “Space Echo”) was my summer ‘08 soundtrack.
I loves shoegaze. That’s no secret to anyone who knows me. There’s been a resurgence as of late of that movement. A nice crop of new bands (”Nu-gaze” as it’s being called) carrying the shoegaze/dream pop torch.
Bands like A Place To Bury Strangers, Serena Maneesh, Fleeting Joys and of course one of my personal favourites, Autolux.
Even pioneers of the movement are getting back in the game. My Bloody Valentine and Swervedriver reunited this year for worldwide tours and possible new albums.
SPC ECO is one of those new “Nu-gaze” bands everyone’s keeping their eye on. They’re the brainchild of Dean Garcia who in the 90s was the mastermind behind electro-shoegaze band Curve.
It all started last year when guitarist Joey Levinson contacted Dean trough his MySpace profile. From that, a band was born. But what makes this new project worthwhile in my opinion, is singer Rose Berlin, a.k.a. Dean’s daughter.
At only 16 years old, she’s already full of talent. A chip off the old block if you will. Dean always recorded songs with her since she was 3 years old so it seemed only natural for him to include her in this new project and I think you would agree that her voice is tailor made for this kind of sound. Very reminiscent of Bilinda Butcher from MBV.
Another great underrated 90s shoegaze band by the name of Pale Saints comes to mind while listening to SPC. Dreamy, ethereal vocals, hazy guitars, a beautiful musical landscape
awashed in well thought out feedback.
Anything you would want for the shoegaze lover in you.
Six songs are available on their MySpace page, with So Special being the standout track.
They have an album’s worth of material but right now, they’re looking for a label to release it all. Also, make sure to check out Rose’s solo project. Much more music goodness from this young lady.

* ScarJo and Ryan Reynolds got married this weekend. Whatever. It’s not like I loved him or anything.
* Bill from Tokio Hotel got his own wax figure.. I wonder if Tom is jealous?
* Heather Locklear BOOKED.
* Whoa. This old guy > David Blaine.
* For the low low price of $239, you can see Phelps speak in Toronto.
* Britney’s ex “boyfriend” is a “douche” and claims he has a “sex tape” that he will “sell”. Ass.
* VH1’s list of the best hip-hop songs is exactly what you might expect from a mainstream video channel (yes, I KNOW what website this is). Ok, some of the list is reputable but “In Da Club” or “Baby Got Back” over “Paid In Full”? *suspicious*

I just got home from Janet’s epic 2.5 hour Rock Witchu show, and I’m still so excited (har, har) that I had to dump my thoughts out as soon as possible. So bear with me, cause this could be a long ride.
(”janet” album playing in background… check.)

Ok, where to start without sounding incomprehensible and blubbery.. *collecting thoughts* … Janet Jackson is a f**king superstar. That, fellow jerks, is a fact. I’m going to admit that I had my reservations about this tour because I honestly haven’t been following her music on “Damita Jo”, “20 Y.O.” or “Discipline”, aside from the stand outs (I kind of feel like she’s kind of lost herself musically - no writing credits on “Discipline”, JJ?). But when I heard that she wanted to make this a tour for the fans - a hits tour, if you will - I started frothing at the mouth. Five of Janet’s albums are life staples for me, and a chance to see Miss Jackson in her element is a chance worth taking.
Earlier this year Janet set up a phone line where fans could request songs they’d like to hear on the tour, and the result is a 37 song setlist spanning her entire career, including her pre-”Control” days (which has never been done). Even though many of the songs were given the medley treatment, she gave us enough time to relish them and I didn’t feel like I was cheated of anything (with two exceptions: I wish “You Want This” was longer than 45 seconds and I don’t condone anything less than a full “Anytime, Anyplace”). Anyhoods, as I was about to say, the setlist was fabulous with the following song-per-album breakdown: “Janet Jackson” (1982) - 2 songs, “Dream Street” (1984) - 1 song, “Control” (1986) - 7 songs, “Rhythm Nation 1814″ (1989) - 7 songs, “janet.” (1993) - 5 songs, “The Velvet Rope” (1997) - 3 songs, “All For You” (2001) - 2 songs, “Damita Jo” (2004) - 1 song, “20 Y.O” (2006) - 2 songs, “Discipline” (2008) - 6 songs (plus one bonus track from “Design of a Decade”). There were no real glaring omissions, although I’m sure everyone would add a personal favourite or two to the list. But what really matters is that we got two-and-a-half hours of action!
Standouts for me were “Alright”, “Again”, “All Nite” (complete with video-esque “power outage”), “Got ‘Til It’s Gone”, “I Get Lonely” and “If”. And “Miss You Much”. And pretty much the whole thing. I have to say, a couple of my fave songs weren’t *on* tonight (cough, cough, “That’s The Way Love Goes”), but maybe I’m just being picky cause the last time I saw them live they were perfect. And was that a vocal slip-up I heard in “Again”? (she’s human!!)
And the answer is YES, she’s still picking a dude from the audience to bless with blue balls in an S&M-lite show. Whereas on previous tours she was a little more hands off with the teasing, this time she got very involved and the results were supa amusing. While she sang “Discipline”, Janet paraded around her harnessed victim… WITH SEXY RESULTS. She cooed in his ear, playfully whipped at his chest - you know, the usual - and then she planted a big smooch right on the kisser! And THEN she grabbed his johnson! Hai gurl hai! Whoa.
Some people/reviewers have mentioned the tour’s simplicity in production, which I have absolutely no beef with. There are no extravagant sets (looking at you, Velvet Rope tour), there’s no blatant concept - unless you count the fan’s choice element (which I do). She kept it very simple: crisp dancing, minimal set pieces, occasional pyro and HIT AFTER HIT Y’ALL! The occasional weird ‘good vs evil’ video vignettes were totally superfluous (aside from the fact that they passed the time during costume changes). I want my JJ dancin’ and sangin’… not dressed up like the Gatekeeper from the Nightmare game.
J and her dancers worked the stage like crazy, making use of the huge U-shaped catwalk that took up a good third of the floor. It’s weird, cause Janet has this way of making you feel like she’s looking right at you when she waves to the audience. OR MAYBE SHE WAS LOOKING AT ME. After all, I was fangasming only 8 rows up from the stage. Gotta say though, we had kind of a weak crowd in terms of noise and sing-a-longs. Show ya girl some love, you know?!
In near-conclusion, and to bring this full circle, JANET IS A STAR. She’s an entertainer first, and she knocked this show for fans out of the park. This show is not about vocals, it’s not about musicianship; it’s about losing your thoughts for a couple hours, reminiscing and having a good time. And a crazy good time it was!

PS: LL Cool J opened, and I’ve been wanting to see him perform forevs. Gotta say, as hott as it was to see him onstage I was kind of let down by his set! It was like LL-Lite … perhaps the stuff you’d expect him to perform as an opener but not enough of what you really want to hear. He licked his lips and flexed his muscles and brought girls on stage, and it was all kind of meh. But at least he did “Around The Way Girl” - otherwise somebody we know (read: me) would’ve had a fit.
