The nominees for the 9th Annual Independent Music Awards (ie: “The Indies”) were announced last night and here’s the full list. Some highlights:

FAVOURITE GROUP/DUO: Arkells, Beast, Crystal Castles, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, USS
FAVOURITE SOLO ARTIST: Brendan Canning, Chad VanGaalen, City and Colour, Kathleen Edwards, Lights
FAVOURITE LIVE ARTIST/GROUP: Bedouin Soundclash, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, Stars, The Trews, The Weakerthans
FAVOURITE ELECTRONIC ARTIST/GROUP OR DUO: Crystal Castles, Deadmau5, Fidgital, Ghislain Poirier, Woodhands
FAVOURITE PUNK/HARDCORE ARTIST/GROUP: Brutal Knights, Cancer Bats, D.O.A., Fucked Up, Protest The Hero
FAVOURITE ROCK ARTIST/GROUP: Black Mountain, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, The Stills, The Weakerthans, Wolf Parade
FAVOURITE URBAN ARTIST/GROUP: Cadence Weapon, D-Sisive, DL Incognito, Moka Only, Shad

Hmmm. I really have no idea who’ll win but here are a few of my predictions: Favourite Solo Artist will go to City And Colour (people love the shit outta Dallas Green, come on), Favourite Rock Artist/Group will go to The Stills, who had an amazing year in 2008, and Favourite Urban Artist/Group will clearly go to Shad (RIGHT?). It had better.

The Indies are part of CMW and go down Saturday, March 14 @ 8pm ET at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto – you can buy tickets to the awards show (which is essentially a general admission concert – there are no fancy tables or cuts to k-os or Feist plying themselves with liquor at a table with other Canadian glitterati). The Arkells, Beast, Crystal Castles, Hey Rosetta! and USS are all performing and tickets can be acquired for $35.
