Since the MMVAs celebrate the art of music videos, it seems appropriate to take a moment and acknowledge the art of music video parodies. While any kid with a webcam can belt out a joke tune, (and many, many do) some YouTubers take their silly music videos very seriously.
Below, we’ve rounded up fives parodies of MMVA nominees and performers we think might make you laugh. For the real deal, check out the MMVAs this Sunday, June 15 at 9E/6P on Much, CTV and CTV GO.
1. Lisbug – Lorde’s Royals
YouTuber Lisbug took on Lorde’s Royals from the perspective of a very spoiled and very cute puppy.
2. @Seinfeld2000 – Arcade Fire’s Here Comes the Nighttime
There’s something profoundly mesmerizing about @Seinfeld2000′s mash-up of Seinfeld clips set to Arcade Fire’s Here Comes the Nighttime. The video recounts George and Susan’s relationship, though they’re referred to in the subtitles as Garge and Suzette. It’s so good.
3. SVS Productions – Drake’s Worst Behaviour
There are a lot of Drake parodies on YouTube and they range on varying levels of quality. We like this one from SVS Productions mostly because it seems to be a group of cute, college-aged dudes who wanted to find an excuse to dress up like Urkel.
4. Brittani Louise Taylor – Ariana Grande’s Problem
On a girlier note, popular YouTuber Brittani Louise Taylor does her own version of MMVA performer Ariana Grande’s Problem in the video below. It’s about how exciting it is to stay at a hotel. You know, ’cause you get tiny bottles of shampoo and free pens and stuff.
5. @chomikk – Selena Gomez’s Come and Get It
Selena Gomez is nominated for International Video of the Year for Come and Get It and YouTuber @chomikk, who makes all sorts of music video parodies, rewrote the song to be about his creepy owl statue. These lyrics seem like they were scribbled stream-of-consciousness while drunk, but it kinda works.
