There’s no denying that both Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty (his claim to fame of course is being the part-time lover to super waif model Kate Moss) of Babyshambles and formerly of The Libertines, are extremely gifted musicians. If you haven’t heard already, rumours are circulating amongst all the music blogs that Ms. Wino will be tentatively making an appearance on the next Babyshambles record, along with Madchester alum Shaun Ryder (of The Happy Mondays). Sounds pretty awesome, right?
Under most circumstances, I’d be thrilled to hear about two great artists getting together to work on a record but considering both of their track records - Please see all the archived news items on the two - I’m a little weary of what’s to come. Now in the past, we’ve seen that collaborations between two self-destructive artists can work quite nicely, in fact, the end product is sometimes brilliant. However, the music industry has changed and so have the interest of fans.
Before we used to be satisfied with finding out information on our heroes through the interviews that they did - they were allowed to maintain a sense of mystery - but now we want to know EVERYTHING and ANYTHING on them; that mystique has been destroyed. As a result of our curiosity, a tabloid culture has evolved and Ms. Winehouse and Mr. Doherty are two musicians who are the victims of it. Their rollercoaster personal lives make them easy targets and big money-makers for the gossip rags. So, the mere thought of these two artists coming together is a Publicist’s wet dream. But the big question is: will the pressure of their get together and the scrutiny of their personal lives affect the recording of their music? I fear that this project will ultimately self-destruct because of the whirlwind that surrounds them but perhaps these two artists will prove me wrong.
