A letter to Heidi Montag

January 20th, 2010

Before and After

Following Heidi Montag’s recent reveal after having ten plastic surgeries in one day, the reality and pop star has now announced that she wants to again increase the size of her now DD breasts. Below is an open letter to Heidi.

Dear Heidi,

Stop! Whatever you are doing right now, stop and read this. Leave your bod alone! This craziness has to end.

You have had ten plastic surgeries in one day. You have had two breast enlargement surgeries and you’re only 23. And now you say you want a third? No, no, no.

Your handler…I mean husband, Spencer Pratt, is quoted as saying that he did not want you to get the surgeries. You have taken his ill-fated advice for the last two years and NOW you decide to not listen? Now?

You’re often written in the media as easily dismissible. But you ARE in the media, specifically on a television show that is watched by millions of young people. On Good Morning America you said that young women should love the person on the inside and not worry about their appearance, but that you’re exempt from this idea because you are in the public eye.

Yet, you claim that you have always wanted the surgeries because of bullying you endured as a child. Wanting plastic surgery because of bullying and not because of your current occupation does in fact make you the same as these young women that you seem to see yourself as different from. Hollywood may have enlarged your insecurities, but these insecurities resulted from a childhood that is not uncommon to many people that watch your show, The Hills. Rather than speak up against bullying and use your celebrity to bring awareness to an important and widespread issue, you chose to show your young audience that surgery is the answer to emotional trauma.

You told People Magazine that you did not tell your family about your recent surgeries because they were unsupportive of your first breast and nose surgeries. This is the same family that tried to talk you out of marrying Spencer? You might want to go ahead and listen to them from now on.

There is such a thing as bad press, and you are receiving it right now. Does the media put unrealistic expectations on a person’s physical beauty? Yes. Are you under extra scrutiny being in the public eye? Yes. But, that does not mean that an excessive amount of plastic surgery is appropriate, especially at such a young age when your body is still maturing.

Stop, stop, stop going under the knife, and start looking at why so much of your happiness is related to your physical appearance.

Good luck.
