A Night in the Life of Drake

May 28th, 2009

MuchMusic recently followed rapper Drake as he headed to his first sold-out hometown show at Sound Academy in Toronto. From meeting up with his entourage and arriving at the venue, to chilling in the green room and stepping on stage, we were there to capture every moment. It’s a must-watch cause you’ll get a good sense of Drake’s humble personality and charming nature. Is it just us, or was he particularly charming towards our lovely VJ, Sarah Taylor? Who can blame him, really.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview:

SARAH TAYLOR: You’ve been in studio with some pretty big amazing artists. What was that experience like — Jay-Z in the studio, or Lil Wayne?

DRAKE: It’s amazing to meet people that you idolize and they don’t disappoint you. Jay is like my hero. Wayne inspires me really to do all this stuff. He’s probably the hardest working man I’ve ever met in my life. His work ethic is crazy. He’s like really my mentor.

SARAH: You have all these amazing people, iconic figures who are supporting you. And this amazing American connection, but it’s not really about you being a Canadian at all. It doesn’t really come up.

DRAKE: I think that I blend well with the Americans, as they say. I think I make music where they’re not like ‘Oh, that’s some Canadian music. It’s good for Canadian music.’ Like they just say ‘It’s good music.’ I’m very passionate about people knowing I’m Canadian. I think it adds to the story.

SARAH: So what are we going to expect from tonight’s show?

DRAKE: I just want people to have fun tonight. I’m not trying to be the best right now. Eventually. I would never self-proclaim anything. But I just want people to see the show tonight and be like: ‘He’s going to grow into a great artist and we’re proud of him.’ That’s all.
