A Starry Night

September 11th, 2007

Friday evening, Wendy and I had the opportunity to see Stars perform at the U of T frosh… Both of us were so giddy about the gig that I broke out into a few random dances prior to the show (and yes, Wendy can attest to this). So when the time came and Stars actually hit the stage, I felt like I was going to combust. It has been two years since I last saw them perform and let’s just say that I’ve been in Stars withdrawal since then. Unlike the VFest gig, Torquil and Amy were in a chatty mood so crowd interaction was up to par. In fact, right before Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Torquil introduced the song by saying:

This song is for the person that you may meet and fall in love with today … the one who’s going to break your heart one day, and then after that, they’ll make you want to vomit.

I couldn’t possibly think of a better way to introduce this song to a bunch of young freshmen… I absolutely love it when the band goes into embittered or sweet tirades when introducing their songs because that’s the exact kind of emotion and passion you feel when you listen to their music. Unfortunately, I had to leave early before the set could end (it was for a good reason – to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!) but just as I left the group started to play a fiery rendition of One More Night. A perfect note for me to exit on.

I’m going to retract my statement by saying that the Stars performance from Friday’s gig was not at all disappointing, in fact it was the disappointment from the VFest show that overshadowed the brilliance of what went down the previous night.

Update: I was told that after the U of T gig, the group went to the eTalk/Star Schmooze… So that would explain their lacklustre performance on Saturday…Blame it on the hangover bug.

Second Update: I’m a complete idiot, they performed on Sunday.. So there’s no excuse for their performance at VFest. Welll, let’s blame it on a hangover again.
