Today marks the tenth anniversary of Aaliyah’s untimely death and so I wanted to write a post in her honour.
The music she created was timeless and the impact it had was remarkable. Artists commonly use “timeless” to describe their music but it’s rarely ever achieved. Aaliyah’s voice, however, still evokes the same emotions today as it did the first time we heard “4 Page Letter” or “One In A Million” for the first time.
Not only did we fall in love with her voice but she was often regarded as the princess of the R&B/hip-hop world not only because she was the first woman I had an imaginary long distance relationship with but more so for her angelic presence and picture perfect smile. The fact that she openly loved her family, music and life also made her a favourite by the millions of on-lookers.
After ten years, Aaliyah’s music is still winning over hearts. She is the same angel to my ten-year-old daughter as she was for my sister in 1999. New artists like Drake and Keshia Chante both have been inspired by her music in their releases today.
Aaliyah is timeless and remarkable.
Rest in Peace.
