A$AP Rocky Dives Right Into Toronto

February 1st, 2012

A$AP Rocky made his official international debut in Toronto this past Friday at The Opera House. Performing for just under an hour to a completely sold out audience, the Harlem-based rapper went in on his set (and the crowd) to show that he is definitely worth a bit more than a couple of pesos.

One of the best parts of seeing a new artist roll through your city for the first time is discovering how insane their following can be. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen an artist create the sort of reaction A$AP received solely based on internet hype, but with heavy beats and a brand of gritty, hard rap that isn’t too common in the mainstream scene, it’s no wonder that A$AP Rocky has caught the attention of so many.

Within mere minutes of arriving to the stage, A$AP took a turn for the best when he leapt in for the first of several rounds of crowd surfing, indicating that this intimate show would also be fairly interactive. Between performances of favourites like Get Lit, Brand New Guy and Wassup, A$AP took some time to give shout outs to the crowd, thank the fans for their support and even talked about how he would consider moving to Toronto because he loves our “Crayola Box” city so much.

Then again, with such a welcoming crowd and an on stage cosign from one of the best in the game, how could you not have some love? Toronto-native Drake came through The Opera House to give A$AP an introduction to “the greatest city in the mothaf***ing world” before he heads out on tour next month with Kendrick Lamar. Dressed in his Canada Goose and Nike gloves, Drake treated the crowd to a performance of Cameras and The Motto. It’s crazy how bonkers everyone went for those few minutes, including A$AP Rocky, who threw himself into the crowd, yet again showing that he too is just a fan like the rest of us. When he returned to the stage, A$AP thanked Drake for coming out and showing some love, and disappeared with him into the dark.

A$AP soon returned with some gold swag (aka Cristal courtesy of Drake) to close off what was an amazing show with break out hit Pesos and Out of this World. The night of excitement soon became a night to remember, and I’m sure it’s only a tease of what is to come. Simply put, get on this: A$AP!
