If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from Akon in a while, it’s because he now has enough money to retire – thanks to Lady Gaga.
“She’s pretty much retired me,” he said of the fashion-conscious singer, who he signed to his KonLive label at Interscope Records in 2007. “She was definitely a blessing.”
While Akon hasn’t released an album since 2008’s Freedom, Gaga has stormed onto the charts with three number one singles in Canada and album sales topping eight million units worldwide. She recently took home a pair of Grammys and just won three BRIT Awards on Tuesday.
Gaga had been dropped from another record label just before Akon signed her. Now he’s hoping to work with her on his next CD, which is due out later this year.
In the meantime, he’s happy to share in Gaga’s success. “She came at the right moment,” he says. “I’m glad I believed in her, boy. That goes to show you, if you believe in something strong enough, it will pay off.”
