Back in 2007, Halifax’s Dog Day seemed on the brink of breaking the international market much like Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. Their debut full-length, Night Group, caught the attention of anyone with their ear to the ground and even saw a release by Germany’s Tomlab, a label self-described as purveyors of “Ambient Experimental Electronic music” that has released music by Owen Pallett, Patrick Wolf, Xiu Xiu and Skeletons. But something didn’t click with their follow-up, 2009′s disappointing Concentration, which failed to keep Night Group‘s momentum going. Members Seth Smith and Nancy Urich must have agreed, because when it came time to make their third LP, Deformer, the two chose to “devolve” and reduce Dog Day to a duo. By cleaning house and also launching their own Fundog label, Smith and Urich have also stripped down the sound to the bare essentials: vocals, guitar and drums. In doing so, they’ve instilled Deformer with this rawness that really suits not only the limitations that come with a two-person line-up, but also the kind of riff-riding, fuzz-laden, off-kilter rock’n'roll they’re aiming for. Glad to have them back.
