America’s Best Dance Crew Season 7: Round 1 Part 1

April 16th, 2012

Who’s ready for some more popping, locking, and tutting? We are! And we have your recap of Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew Season 7: Return of the Superstars. Yes, the title is that long. This season, we have ten crews, three judges, and one Mario Lopez to look forward to. Ready? More moves after the jump.

The show opened up with one of the most explosive dance intros I’ve ever seen. If you haven’t watched it, watch it here now! Five crews, coming together, each hitting every single beat with so much force. It made me want to take a dance class. Well, every episode makes me want to take a dance class. You think Mario Lopez could teach me how to dance? Because we’re headed to repeat of the weekly superstar treatment with Return of the Superstars, we began with the great pop princess, Britney Spears.

Can I just say how much I’ve missed Mario Lopez? Welcome back, Slater! Let’s get right into the performances, where we were introduced to the first batch from Round 1. This week we had five crews compete, 8 Flavaz, Mix’d Elements, Irratik, Stepboys, and Fanny Pak.

First up was 8 Flavahz, a cute crew who redefine the word “bi-coastal”. Half of the crew live in Hawaii and the other half live in Los Angeles. In order to practice together they rehearse through webcam! They have made great sacrifices to remain dedicated dancers. They remain home schooled as they pursue their dance careers and if their age is any indication, they’re missing out on a whole lot of crushes and awkward moments for rhythmic domination. Don’t let their cotton candy appearance fool you – they brought their A-game to Season 7, impressing all the judges.

Then next we had Mix’d Elements. These guys are those homegrown boys that have a lot of grit and humour. Their performance to Til The World Ends from Britney was … a little boring. They look really good in stills, but I wasn’t so impressed. I had a feeling that judge JC Chasez wanted to tell them more and be that judge, but I think he was easy on them because it was the first round.

And then we got to Irratik. These girls have it all: moves, talent, and they’re Canadian. We might be biased here, but come on! They come from Montreal and they mean business. While watching their performance, I couldn’t help but notice that they had the best guns of those show, hands down. By guns I mean they have the best arm muscles in the competition. Okay, moving on before it gets weird…

Stepboys have a similar story to Mix’d Elements. They were a bunch of “slackers” as they put it, trying to pull things together and defy the idea that because they don’t have enough means they aren’t worthy of having it all. They are the funny guys of the competition. They rely on gags to pull them through, and while their performance was entertaining, they definitely have to step it up if they’re going to win.

Lastly, we have Fanny Pak. I remember them well from Season 2, and they’re back with a vengeance. They made it to the top three of Season 2 and they have their eyes on the prize. I was really entertained by their performance because it was so classically Fanny Pak. It was funny but strong, the perfect balance between the two. I think Stepboys could learn a thing or two from these guys. Looks like the judges missed the Pak too as they gave some glowing reviews of the choreography.

In the end, we learn that Mix’d Elements are at the bottom and will have the dance for their lives on the following show. Next week we have superstar Flo Rida performing with the crews as well as we will get to meet the next batch of the first round of judging. I can hardly wait, because it’s going to be a wild one.
