America’s Best Dance Crew Season 7: Round 5

June 1st, 2012

Has it already been six weeks since Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew: Return of the Superstars began? If you haven’t yet, watch the episode here. It has been quite the process and we only have five crews left – who do you think will be crowned the ABDC champs? This week the crews had to dance to the musical styling of Mr. International himself, Pitbull. With Pitbull’s signature dance anthems on their sides, the crews busted out early for an opening number that got even Pitbull nodding his head. The opening number even had a cameo by the ICONic Boyz.

Pitbull also played double duty and gave all the crews their challenges. You ready to talk shop and break it down with the crews? Here we go!

Elektrolytes was first up with Pitbull’s I Know You Want Me. They were challenged by Pitbull to incorporate capoeira into their routine. Two brothers in the crew grew up learning martial arts and went as far as calling their dojo-owning father for advice on choreo. Their routine did in fact have capoeira in it, but unfortunately that was it and the routine  was boring. But their growth and gumption will carry them over until next week.

Next up we have 8 Flahvaz with a performance of Pitbull’s Hey Baby. What I liked best about their performance was that they told a story and still (as always) kept their routine really age-appropriate. JC Chasez commented on this briefly, saying how he would have wanted to see the performance get a little more “grimey” (also known as “sexier”) but he conceded to the idea that that would be inappropriate for them (duh!). This group can do powerful and provocative but in a very tasteful way and that is an extreme strength of theirs.

After the 8 Flavahz performance, ICONic Boyz came out to say hello to their fans and to the hosts. They are just so darn cute!

Uh-oh. Fans of Mos Wanted Crew avert your eyes! This week the crew danced and incorporated a traditional Russian dance flavour to their routine. They looked great … except that they screwed up a few times during their routine. Now, we’ve been talking for weeks about how Mos Wanted  Crew has been slipping and we’re worried their they burnt out faster than you could say “A.C. Slater”. They are luckily safe for next week, so at least that’ll give us and Lil’ Mama some more eye-candy time with Ian.

Ah, Fanny Pak. Again, they are in the bottom two again this week.  They had to dance to a Pitbull anthem with the flare of Bollywood into their dance. They looked great, but their choreography doesn’t particularly grab me. Their concepts are solid and artistic, don’t get me wrong. But that’s what makes them Fanny Pak and that’s what keeps them from being America’s Best Dance Crew.

Also in the bottom two is Rated Next Generation. I am so pumped for this group that I am pretty shocked that they are in the bottom when Mos Wanted Crew has been struggling for weeks now (America must be pumped for Ian like us). Their routine again was a delight and so entertaining.

And the biggest surprise of the night? The judges saved both crews so Fanny Pak and Rated Next Generation could dance another week. I couldn’t agree with this action more – the bottom two performances were better than some of the saved crew’s offering for the week. Next week, the crews will have to battle it out to the music of Rihanna. Wonder if we’ll get to see some cakecakecakecakecakecake?

Mario Lopez Quote of the Week: … This week, I couldn’t find anything funny to even warrant a quote. AC, are you losing your touch?

See you guys next week! Remember, you can always watch this episode again here and check out our ABDC page with all the goods, including photos and more recaps! And be sure to watch Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew: Return of the Superstars on Sunday nights at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT right here on MuchMusic.
