American Idol Does Mariah Carey

Even if you TRIED to escape her… you couldn’t possibly. First she was crowned the most successful female recording artist in history. Then she went on to land her 18th #1 single and surpass none other than Elvis Presley in the Billboard Charts. And now, just yesterday in fact, she released her 11th studio album E=MC2. In honor of her album release, American Idol celebrated by theming last night’s show “Mariah Carey Night”. So what did this entail? The remaining 7 contestants had the privilege of being mentored by the one and only, and in last night’s show, they all performed different Mariah Carey songs.

Here’s a Coles Notes version of how it all went down… and let’s start with the ladies.

There are 4 girls still in the running (Brooke White, Syesha Mercado, Carly Smithson and Kristy Lee Cook) and I gotta be honest, last night none of them delivered a performance that was anything to write home about. I mean, they were *alright*, some obviously better than others, but the fact that Simon Cowell used the analogy of a meatless burger to describe one of their performances pretty much sums things up.

Moving on to the male performances of the evening.

There are 3 guys left in the running (David Archuleta, Jason Castro and David Cook) and compared to the performances that the girls gave, the boys stole the show, HANDS DOWN. David Archuleta performed ‘When You Believe’ which kicked off the show, and Jason Castro closed the show with a ‘beach-island’ remix of ‘I Don’t Wanna Cry’. In the middle of these two performances is when it really happened. You know…*it*. David Cook took the stage and performed a rocker version of ‘Always Be My Baby’. If ONLY you could have seen the look on my face… one word: SOLD! He was AMAZING! I would have never thought that the Mariah melody could be transformed into a rocker chorus, but it was goooooood! Randy Jackson gave him the first standing ovation he’s given all season, and DAYUM was it well deserved!

Now if you thought that yesterday marked the end of all the Mariah media madness, you may have been a little mislead. Yes, her album’s already dropped; Yes she’s already broken records and made music history; And yes, Mariah Carey theme night on American Idol is officially over. So here you are thinking, “Hey, maybe it’s time I took a bit of a diva breather.” Not Quite Yet. Tonight for ‘Results Night’ on Idol, she’s performing LIVE! Oh, just suck it up. This is one artist that you’ve already been hearing about forever, and it doesn’t look like that’s gonna change any time soon.
