America’s Best Dance Crew 2 [Episode 8]

August 11th, 2008

This week on America’s Best Dance Crew, I was sent on an emotional rollercoaster of extreme highs and lows. The highs? 80s Week! It doesn’t get much radder than that. The lows? Well, let’s just say that I question America’s voting tactics (and I’m not talking about McCain vs. Obama). But more on that later. First, let’s get right to some tubular dancing, shall we?

In Round 1, the crews had to recreate some 80′s moves with an added challenge. Super CR3W were up first and had to perform one of their 80′s moves with only four feet on the floor.

Songs: Young MC – Bust A Move, Digital Underground – Humpty Dance, Cameo – Word Up.

Nice use of levels and chain reactions, nice use of actual choreography, and some of the tricks were pretty impressive. My favourite was the one-handed hand stand on the other crew member’s chest. I just envision his hand going through his chest cavity and it totally creeps me out. Nicely done. The green jumpsuits are pretty dope too.

Shane Sparks says it was crazy; Lil Mama says it was crazy and “super” and amazing; JC Chasez says it was fun to watch and a great way to start the show (and he liked the “humpty towers”).

Oh, look – Tila Tequila is in the audience, shimmying. [Cut to me rolling my eyes].

Next up was SoReal Cru who had to do a chain reaction with their Kid ‘n Play dance.

Songs: Bell Biv DeVoe – Poison, Heavy D & The Boyz – Now That We Found Love, Bobby Brown – Every Little Step

This routine was fun and high-energy with amazing colourful outfits, but overall it was a bit silly maybe…? It just seemed a little amateur or something. It was missing that extra umpf that I can’t place my finger on… Very frustrating.

Lil Mama says she expected more out of them, but it was a lot of fun; JC says overall it was a good performance; Shane says they did the moves but didn’t have the energy that was required.

Next was Fanny Pak whose challenge was to dance horizontally at some point in their routine.

Songs: Club Nouveau – Lean On Me, Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby

Fanny Pak came out fighting. It was danced well, choreographed well, and it was clever as always (the “word to your mother” mom pictures was a great touch). Cute as always.

JC says Glenda is the most athletic female of the season; Shane says they deserve to be where they are and applaudes them; Lil Mama says they are “so 80s” and that she really appreciates this group.

And now for some results! (And the beginning of my “lows” that I was talking about earlier). You see, SoReal Cru are SAFE! Now, don’t get me wrong – I think SoReal Cru are good, but it definitely should be Fanny Pak and Super CR3W battling it out in the finale next week. Ugh… I’m slowly getting annoyed with this show. This season hasn’t been working out like it should… (Case in point: A.S.I.I.D. and Supreme Soul’s premature departures).

So then it was begrudgingly off to Round 2: The Dance Movie Challenge. I say “begrudgingly” because we all now know that either Super CR3W or Fanny Pak are going home… But first up, the safe “Cru” of SoReal.

SoReal Cru
Movie: Breakin’ (1984)

OK, I take it back (sort of) – this was the best I’ve ever seen SoReal Cru. With their amazing use of mirrors and the creative use of the brooms and the full use of the stage, they managed to stay together and the timing was spot on. They have finally stepped up their game. But finale-worthy…? I’m not so sure. I feel it should be “too little too late.”

Shane says it put them in a whole other level which was needed; Lil Mama says they proved to everybody why they are in the top; JC says it was very clean and “good.”

And now for the Bottom 2…

Super CR3W
Movie: Footloose (1984)

High energy, nice to see them full on dancing, showing their more cheesy side (the finger snaps were great). They were more just “straight up” this time around, but the tricks were still definitely there, if a bit more subtle than usual. Excellent job.

Fanny Pak
Movie: Flashdance (1983)

Hilarious. Once again Fanny Pak show how clever they are and that they have a great sense of humour. And yes, they can effin’ dance! When they went down into the section where the boys did the arms and the girls did the legs, that’s not an easy thing to do. It was all very quick, high-energy from the get-go, and overall entertaining and impressive. Why is this crew not in the finale?

Shane says to Super CR3W that no matter what happens they totally represented for B-Boys and Break Dancers and that their routine was beautiful and creative and almost perfect; Lil Mama says to Fanny Pak that they were creative, theatrical, humorous and entertaining from beginning to end; JC says that if anyone thinks SoReal Cru out-danced these other two crews, that he doesn’t buy it (hear, hear JC) – that nobody is more athletic than Super CR3W and nobody is more creative than Fanny Pak.

Now this is the part of the show where I got worried and started throwing my avocado and peanut stir fry dinner at the TV. Neither one of these crews should be going home, but I’ve sort of come to expect this from this season.

And the crew that was safe was… Super CR3W.

Meaning that Fanny Pak had to pack up and go home. FAIL!

I’m bitter and I actually agree with JC for once: SoReal Cru should be going home. Yup, that’s right – I said it. Disagree? Leave ‘em in the comments.
