For his spring 2012 couture show, Jean Paul Gaultier was heavily inspired by the late, great Amy Winehouse. Passing away six months ago, Amy left a huge legacy that won’t be replicated for a very long time. Taking cues from her sky high wingtip eyeliner, beehive bouffant do and steely glare, the show was rife with Winehouse references.
The collection itself is another impressive outing from the designer, with dramatic pops of colour and lots of lace. Then he dived into glitter & pant suits, then exposed lingerie. His spring collection is definitely all over the place – chaotic organization all in the name of fashion. Model Lindsay Wixson rocked that purple wig, though!
Unfortunately, Amy’s father has slammed the designer and the collection, saying “we’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music [is] in bad taste.” Kelly Osbourne tweeted “although @JPGaultier was paying homage to my dear friend & icon to the world i found it to be lucratively selfish and distasteful!”
What a backlash! What do you think about the controversy? Do you think Gaultier should have said no, no, no to the Winehouse homage?
