For the last couple of months, Eminem has owned the album charts around the world, but today comes the news that Canadian indie powerhouse Arcade Fire have knocked Slim Shady off the top.
Arcade Fire’s labelmates Spoon, of all sources, first reported the news that The Suburbs had reached number one on the Billboard chart via Twitter: “Let the record reflect that Merge Records is the NUMBER ONE LABEL IN THE USA! Here’s to Arcade Fire and Merge: #1 — 156k copies sold.” (156079 to be precise.)
This comes a few days after the band were triumphant in claiming the top spot, once again from Eminem, in the UK, where they sold 61,000+ copies.
Not to be outdone on their home soil, The Suburbs again knocked Eminem off his pedestal here in Canada by selling an impressive 31,119 units, which works out to one in 1000 Canadians picking it up in its first week. Not bad for an indie rock band.
