Joe Pernice thinks it's high time Cribs catered to the indie crowd. Pernice recently moved to Toronto and gives us a tour of his apartment to show us how this project could come to fruition.
Wouldn't you love to see Bright Eyes, The Arcade Fire, Beck, or maybe even PJ Harvey livin' large in their decked out pads?
The Doves/Mercury Rev show at the Kool Haus last night just about blew my mind. People were tearing their faces off with excitement -- which, as any regular concert-goer in Toronto can attest to, is quite the rarity -- and Doves frontman Jimi Goodwin even went so far as to say that Toronto was "by far the best f---ing crowd of the tour so far, no word of a lie." The crowd was a definite oddity (ranging in age from about 12-60), but their enthusiastic response and applause were only fitting for the talent and energy that both bands showed while on stage.
Openers Mercury Rev started out the evening on a good note with an hour long set that could only be described as majestic -- cosmic, even, with a backdrop of visuals and inspring quotes perfectly timed to the performance. Singer Jonathan Donahue directed the other band members like an orchestra, and grinned and gazed out into the crowd as though he was on some sort of personal mind trip.
Doves followed with a 90 minute setlist packed with favourites, focusing mostly on material from their last two albums. Jimi, Jez and Andy showed off their skills and traded instrument duties on a few tracks (Words, Here it Comes, There Goes the Fear). House of Blues security at the Kool Haus was tight as always (a few people had their cameras nabbed partway through the night) but surprisingly the sound was actually half decent for a venue known for sub-par quality. I came home still buzzing from the great performances by both bands; a great way to kick off a really concert-heavy week for me.
You've gotta love any job where you get to travel for work purposes. And when you're travelling to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, well, you really can't complain. And what a world Walt Disney World is.
First rule of Disney Club - everyone and everything is happy. Always.
Second rule of Disney Club - everyone that works there is a cast member. Whether you're dressed up as Mickey Mouse or cleaning the toilet, you're still a cast member.
Third rule of Disney Club - any section of the parks that's behind the scenes is called "backstage." And the things we saw and heard "backstage" are to be kept secret. So while I'd like to tell you that we saw Herbie the car hanging out in the parking lot... well, I can't. He was backstage.
With those rules in mind, our VJ Leah and I explored just about everything at Walt Disney World. And joining us for the fun were Ciara, Ryan Cabrera and Yellowcard. All of these artists were there performing for Grad Night at the park, which is a huge deal with a whole bunch of high school students hanging out and going on the rides.
Ryan Cabrera was a lot of fun to hang out with. And before you start wondering: yes, his hair really is that big. It has a permanent "scared" look to it. Maybe it has something to do with the fact he went on a bunch of rides with Leah. I think her vice grip on his arm is probably settling into some nice bruises right about now. Just between you and me, where exactly do you think Leah's hand is? And is that a look of shock or joy on Ryan's face?
But Ryan was a trooper and a really great guy. Because, seriously, it's gotta suck when you break up with your girlfriend, otherwise known as ASHLEE SIMPSON, and then you still have to work with your manager who also happens to be ASHLEE'S DAD!
Yellowcard were some wacky guys. It might have something to do with the fact their violinist was celebrating his birthday and they'd already been "celebrating" for a couple of hours before the interview. Luckily we took them on a pretty tame ride, although, having Yellowcard puke would have made some fantastic television.
Ciara is one of the friendliest artists I've ever had a chance to meet. Sure, we were kept waiting for about 2 hours while she got her hair and make up done, but when she arrived at 2am for her interview, she was an absolute doll. It was one of those situations where I actually like her more after getting a chance to meet her. We also got Leah and Ciara to ride on the Teacups and the Dumbo ride. Coolest coincidence of the evening? While riding on Dumbo, a DJ somewhere in the park starting blasting Missy Elliott's brand new track which features Ciara rapping. I'd like to think that perhaps Mickey Mouse had slipped someone $5 to make this happen, but I think I'll just let it go with the fact that we were in the most magical place on earth.
