Live Earth T.O. - On Kalan Porter's Mind

Hey Guys,
I'm at MuchMusic for a Live Earth Interview... and actually feeling a little hypocritical. I'm probably as bad as anyone. I get inspired and think...ok I'm never driving again...and I'm not showering for a year. And then in 10 minutes when it becomes too much hassle I go back to my old ways. I think it's because I think about going "Green" as something drastic and extreme reserved for radical hippies. But maybe it's not about transforming your whole life. Maybe it's not about only using half a square of organic soybean toiletpaper. Maybe it's about the little things. Any little thing. Today has been very motivating. Ok...I'll shower once a month.

Kalan, I think you made a good point about trying to do as many small things as you can to help the envirement...it all adds up.

You are too practical, Kalan.

How about this ... instead of showering once a month, please shower everyday but reuse the same water? Eeewwwww!

Great to see you out and about, Kalan. Keep well. I mean keep the earth well. Ta-da!

Good point Kalan, I do think that people are quite hypocritical when it comes to this stuff. Sure people will be doing a lot of stuff now, but when the media attention of the event wares off how many people are really gonna continue to help out? Sure I'll turn off lights when I leave a room, but outside of that I don't know that I would stick to many hardcore life changes.

Great point Kalan! I hope everyone will realize that by doing small things...like showering once a month ;)...we are helping save the earth in BIG ways! So do whatever you can to help out...even if that means turning your computer off while not in use...which I'm going to do right now. Bye

I don't really think it's about doing EVERYTHING and not making any mistakes or indulging once in a while. Otherwise we are ALL hypocrites, right?

I don't think we'll be able to REVERSE or stop the earth's decay, but we can at the very least slow it down. I don't drive a car, I don't use hot water for laundry (which I try to do only when necessary) or in my showers (and I don't wash my hair every day), which are quick. I am vegetarian, I use energy efficient lightbulbs, and I pay my own electricity so I'm conscious of unplugging appliances/electronics and turning off lights. I recycle paper and cans and I'm rarely a passenger in an empty car, if any car at all. But I'm sure there are also some non-eco-friendly things that I do too. Sometimes I get takeout and it's in styrofoam containers; I buy stuff and take bags even when I could go without. I don't always buy seasonally OR locally. Etc, etc.

You can't do it ALL and you can't help the waste that other people create. But that doesn't mean you don't at least try to help out however you can. Every bit helps, right?

I totally agree with you Kalan. If every person on this earth takes one small step to help the environment, no matter how insignificant we think it is, all our efforts combined will make a huge difference. If we don?t do it, who will do it for us?
