Roisin Murphy = The New Kylie

January 3, 2008

OK, let's not beat around the bush: Kylie Minogue's supposed 'comeback' stank. It was mediocre at best. Here we all were expecting a comeback of "Madonna/Confessions On A Dancefloor" proportions, and instead we got something more akin to a new Chumbawumba song. Weak.

I tried to warm up to X, Kylie's tenth studio album and first release since 2002's Body Language, but I just couldn't. I listened about a dozen times. When people say an album is a "grower", I assume they mean it'll have grown on you by the twelfth listen. Looking through my star ratings on my iPod, I see only two songs that merit three or four stars - 2 Hearts and The One.

All of the others are bland and instantly forgettable - for Kylie. Tsk tsk. Anyone else could have released this album and it might have been considered terrific. But this is KYLIE MINOGUE. Her comeback album. And it was produced by slick A-names like Calvin Harris (HEARTS!) and Cathy Dennis, who wrote Can't Get You out of My Head for Kylie back in 2001 as well as Britney Spears' Toxic.

Cathy Dennis nicely segues into the reason I'm writing in the first place. She makes a co-writer appearance on Overpowered, the second solo album from former Moloko songstress Róisín Murphy.

You'll recall that Overpowered was on my list of favourite albums in 2007 - and I just want to let you know that if you miss top notch, danceable, uber-cathy Kylie, listen to Róisín's album immediately. Particularly the following songs, all of which you can listen to on MySpace below:

You Know Me Better
Let Me Know
Cry Baby
Movie Star
Overpowered

Overpowered is everything X should have been. I guess you can only have one comeback, and Kylie had hers in 2001 with Fever.
