Hearing all the bullshit public bickering between Scott Weiland and his now former bandmates in Velvet Revolver probably would have never really bothered me before - you just come to expect it with rock bands: The Police, The Band, Stone Temple Pilots (before recently reuniting)...even Simon and Garfunkel broke up over money or drama. There is a weird charm of being a bitchy rock star that goes hand in hand with being a famous music maker, I get that...but when I watched Anvil! The Story Of Anvil recently, I started looking at those things differently.
Do you remember Anvil? They are a Canadian metal band who put their first album out almost 30 years ago and were part of the first surge of North American Metal as it began to explode...they played Super Rock Japan '84 with every major metal band of the time.
While every one of those bands took off and had huge success in the 80s and beyond, Anvil didn't break out the same way, but, they have been making music together ever since, existing and struggling just like any other indie band while their peers made millions.
Every band I have interviewed and pretty much every musician EVER has talked about doing it for the love of music, purely for the love of music. Anvil is the only band right now I think I really and truly believe - and trust me there is plenty of band drama and bickering between them that you'll see in this film - the difference with them is there is way more respect for each other...someone should send a copy to Scott Weiland.
Slash, Lars Ulrich and Lemmy all make appearances in this doc to show their respect for Anvil...this will be your favourite movie, I promise. Check out my interview with Anvil on The NewMusic this coming Victoria Day - Monday, May 19 @ 9:30pm ET.
Now go buy some Anvil music!
