America's Best Dance Crew 2 [Episode 2]

July 2, 2008

After being away for the oh-so-long Canada Day weekend, I finally had a chance to watch the latest episode of America's Best Dance Crew... Here's how it all went down:

This week, it's the Video Star Challenge, where the crews have to emulate the moves from the hottest dance music videos but also bring their own flavour. But first, some dramatic results... Duh duh duuuhhnnn.

Hells yeah - Fanny Pak is not in the bottom this week, but up first is Super CR3W.

Super CR3W
Song: Chris Brown - Run It

Even though they left the ninja outfits at home this week, Super CR3W are definitely still putting up a fight. This routine was creative, their funky chickens were hilarious and they definitely were fully aware of using the entire stage and the visual pop of using levels. Up, down, and side-to-side, this crew is definitely top notch. Some of their spacing might not have been as slick and tight as it should be, but they make up for any slight hiccups with their hard-hitting energy.

JC Chasez loves their flair for the theatrical and their athleticism, but his only fear is that there were more tricks than actual dancing; Shane Sparks thinks that tricks and breaking IS dancing and then said "y'all" about 20 times; Lil Mama was entertained and thought it was cute and fun, calling Super CR3W "the real deal."

Erm, Mario Lopez just uttered the following words with absolutely no sense of irony: "That's DJ Rashida cuttin' up the wax and we just saw Super CR3W throw DOWN like Chris Brown." HA! So ridiculous.

Fanny Pak
Song: Gwen Stefani - Wind It Up

fanny-pak-ep2.jpg

Hm - I gotta admit, I'm kind of disappointed. Fanny Pak was my favourite crew last week, but this week they weren't as fun. Their dancing is definitely good, but they shouldn't even have attempted to do the flair/windmill if they have never actually done it before. It just looks weak and amateur. They need to stick to the dancing and stick to being quirky and they'll be set. So overall, I still love this group and this routine was good, but it definitely lacked the certain punch they had last week.

Shane enjoyed it and appreciates that they attempted the breakdancing and said "y'all" a bunch more; JC thought it was a bit sloppy at times, but funny; Lil Mama loves their style and their creativity.

More results! Supreme Soul and Phresh Select are dancing next, but Xtreme Dance Force is in the Bottom 3.

Supreme Soul
Song: Omarion - Touch

supreme-soul-ep2.jpg

The judges gave this crew a hard time last week, saying they were a bit messy and too concerned about their visual gags, but this week they definitely cleaned up their act. There was much more actual dancing, creative choreography and it was all extremely well-executed. I'm glad the boys of Supreme Soul have stepped up their game. (Although I do miss their stylish cardigans from last week.)

Lil Mama thinks they were "lollygagging" at first, but then got "crazy" and liked how they "swerve it in" (you following?); Shane thinks they took it to another level and "ripped it"; JC thinks it was very intricate and fun and is happy that they "showed up" this week.

Phresh Select
Song: Chris Brown - Gimme That

phresh-select-ep2.jpg

Last week, the judges liked this crew, but for some weird reason, they just don't do it for me and this week is no different. I mean, I can see they are talented and competent, but I just find them to be a bit bland and forgettable. Someone please tell me what I'm missing here...

JC thinks they struggled at the beginning, but started to shine by the end; Lil Mama thinks they look stunning, but says they have to take risks; Shane thinks they had a lot of good things in their routine, but that they have to hit their moves a little harder.

And even MORE results! SoReal Cru and A.S.I.I.D. are safe and dancing next, but Boggie Bots is in the Bottom 3.

A.S.I.I.D.
Song: Ciara - Like A Boy

asiid-ep2.jpg

Phresh Select could take a lesson from A.S.I.I.D. Shane mentioned that Phresh needs to hit harder, and A.S.I.I.D. defintely do just that. They come out aggressive, yet clean. They are high energy and so far have not done anything half-assed. The girls ripping their shirts off at the end was definitely a bold move and shows they are willing to take risks. I love this crew.

JC likes the group because of their high energy and that they emulated the video very well; Shane thinks they "ripped it" and loved the crotch grab, and thinks that so far this has been the best episode ever; Lil Mama doesn't fully agree, thinking it was TOO aggressive and that they didn't ride out the moves fully.

SoReal Cru
Song: Usher - Love In This Club

soreal-cru-ep2.jpg

Even though I think that this song is ultimately pretty silly, SoReal Cru managed to be extremely sexy. From the opening orgy of a move, to their slick, tight choreo, they provided context and showed just how hot they actually are. The guy's flip at the end was obviously not that smooth, but that's forgivable in a routine where everything else was spot on.

Shane thinks they did Usher proud and that choreography-wise, everything was there - it was the sloppy tricks that bothered him; Lil Mama thinks it was good, but that they need to "put that extra stab into the heart of the chicken"; JC likes this group and enjoyed their spins and thinks they are one of the cleanest groups in the competition.

Yet more results. (Ugh - just dance already!) Sass x7 and Boogie Bots will be facing off in the Bottom 2, meaning Xtreme Dance Force is safe and dancing next.

Xtreme Dance Force
Song: Mario - Let Me Love You

xtreme-dance-force-ep2.jpg

This routine wasn't that bad. It's hard for me to admit that because I sort of do want them to fail (they reek of cockiness and arrogance), but when it comes to the dancing, these guys are pretty talented. These moves took them out of their element a bit and it showed (they aren't used to such smooth choreo), but they did pull it off. So they were good, but not great. Am I the only one who is not fully diggin' this crew?

JC thinks it's nice they really stuck to the intricacy of the choreo in the video and that their look this week is a good one; Lil Mama was feeling it and thought it was interesting, but that they need to stop making "I'm the shit" faces; Shane applaudes this week's routine and thinks this style of choreo is what they need to be doing more of.

And now for the Bottom 2...

Boogie Bots
Song: B2K f. Diddy - Bump, Bump, Bump

boogie-bots-ep2.jpg

I think it's important for these crews to take risks, and I feel Boogie Bots did just that. They weren't afraid to get a bit feminine and fun with their moves and I think it was effective. They were creative and clever. Me likey.

Sass x7
Song: Britney Spears - I'm A Slave 4 U

sass-x7-ep2.jpg

The choreography in this video is pretty well-known and Sass x7 stuck to it pretty closely. Xtreme Dance Force also stuck to their video's choreo, but then made it their own. Even though Sass x7 obviously did it well and were sexy, I didn't see them bring anything new to the table. I kept waiting for something more to happen and then it was just suddenly over. I think they'll be going home this week.

Lil Mama likes Boogie Bots' jokes and thinks they deliver with a bang; Shane thinks the Sass x7 choreography was beautiful and hot; JC thinks the Boogie Bots choreo was clean and playful and that Sass x7 proved why they are on the show and captured the idea of the video very well.

And now the FINAL results... Boogie Bots stays and therefore the Sass x7 banner must fall. (Who didn't see those results a mile away?)

Hugs all around.

And oh yeah - next week's recap will be on time. Promise.

Why the hell is J.C. Chasez a judge for this competition, for a guy who came from a failing boy band, he can't dance for shit so how can he judge dancing. So many better people could've taken his spot as a judge on this show!!!!
