Matt Wells: Mike Reno

September 5, 2008

See the latest episode of Where You At, Baby? with Mike Reno, this Sunday at 8:30pm ET on MuchMoreMusic!

Oh Mike Reno. Aside from the fact that I had a HORRIBLE cold while in Vancouver to hang with the headbanded (is that a word?) superstar himself, I had so much fun checkin in with Mike Reno.

Knowing how many MILLIONS of albums Loverboy had sold I was curious to see how Mike was living, and as you'll see in the show he's living very modestly - no gold plated doors or servants running around, which Mike attributes to 2 divorces in the light-hearted way only Reno can. But he did tell me that after the first Loverboy album, he was set for life, everything after that was just gravy ... he also told me he lost a SHIT load in some bad investments as well - but TRUST me, Mike is doing just fine. Mike has a super grounded outlook on his fame and success and doesn't take any of it for granted or take himself too seriously. A really cool guy to chat with.

It was my first time in Vancouver and I couldn't have had a better tour guide and the conversation was super interesting. We had a long chat about the early 80's payola scandal and how that actually HURT loverboy... I had heard bits and pieces of this story before, but to hear it from Mike's mouth was AMAZING - turn it loose PROBABLYY would have gone number one. (You can soon check it out in the "extras" section of the show page).

Something I didn't know was that Huey Lewis and The News were given their very first big tour by Loverboy and Mike remembers a time when Huey was telling him they weren't sure if they could keep going or if their music was gonna hit. Good thing Huey kept at it I think.

Also, it is true I was literally tripping over gold and platinum records in Mike's house and garage, they were EVERYWHERE, but he doesn't like putting them on the walls, they are just stored behind couches and in the garage (he JUST moved in). His lady actually put the big ass 9 MILLION sales one on the wall while he was on the road and he took it down when he got back. Shit... I'd hang it around my neck.

He also told me about the time he changed hotel rooms one night in Vancouver so he could accommodate more friends for a party, and this was a time before cell phones... his band couldn't find him and all left for a show in Anaheim... no one realized he was in a different room. He had to rent a leer jet on his own dime, then a cop car (that had leather pants and a headband waiting for him inside) picked him up and drove him to the gig where he literally jumped on stage and performed to 60, 000 people!

The thing I loved about this guy is that he still has the desire for a number one hit and to be the biggest rockstar in the world again. Huey told me that he is done with that part of his life, he likes playing the hits but doesn't have that same competitive gumption bands have when they are young. Mike STILL has that fire under his ass that he had when he played in his first band and it's really inspiring.

Loverboy: 80s cheese yes, but one of the most successful CDN bands EVER. And they SHOULD at the VERY least be in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Turn it loose,
=matt

The powers that be that run the Canadian Hall of Fame should be ashamed and embarassed that Loverboy to this date have not been inducted to the hall! This band has made one of the largest, if not, "the largest" impact in Canadian rock history ever and they are long overdue their recognition! Out of respect to Mike and the memebers of the band, past and present, and every Canadian who has been "lov'in every minute of it" and "work'in for the weekend, Loverboy is truly "Canadian Hall of Famers Forever! Rock on Mike!

I believe the book is called "Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business" by Fredric Dannen.

Matt the interview was great! Mike was fabulous. You captured his personality and his terrific sense of humor. What a pleasure to watch. I really enjoyed it.

I've been a huge Mike Reno/Loverboy fan since the beginning. I totally agree with the comment posted by Frank. Loverboy NOT being in the Canadian Hall of Fame is nothing short of criminal. They've rocked the music industry for 28 years and they are still going strong. Their new CD "Just Getting Started" is awesome. Every song has the potential to be a number one hit. In my opinion no one deserves to be in the Hall of Fame (in Canada and in the States) more than those guys.
Keep rockin' Mike, we will never kick you off the stage!!!!

I just saw Loverboy in Knoxville TN. Mike and Matt got out of a van and walked right into the ampitheatre as my buddy and I were talking to the spotlight crew, some guys we know here in town. Man, Mike is one tall dude. They played only one song from the new album. I just wanted to tell Mike and his bandmates that their new album is totally awesome. Not one "filler" song on it..all solid tunes, and Mike seems to sing with heartfelt emotion, and the guys play excellently too. I sure wish radio would play this album. My girlfriend and her friends in their office are playing it almost every time I call her at work (I hear it in the background.) I wish the band well, got to see them 3 times in the last four yrs in Knoxville. Great job on the new album...I swear its my favorite Loverboy album,,,Keep on Rockin...Randy in Knoxville

Matt -

Gotta say, watched the show for five minutes, thought it was a typical VH1 Behind the Scenes or E! THS....however, I was wrong - impressive stuff!

We actually want you to host our kick off party in January here in Vancouver - we've tried calling the offices in TDOT but don't even know where to start.

If you're interested, let me know or call the office - STIRLING PACIFIC.

a very good friend of my girlfriend's and mine too was Kevin Lecki who used to be the light and sound guy for a band from Niagara Falls called Honeymoon Suite and the band eventually got into drugs, etc. and Kevin moved to the States and began working with bands over there.......he was on the Loverboy/Hooters tour and later with Bryan Adams for years and Loverboy played with him sometimes..........he eventually worked with everyone and worked his way up to be the stage manager of a lot of poplular bands and retired after the U2 tour that went over to the Far East at the age of 40 to stay home with his wife..........so when he came with whatever band to Detroit (we lived across the border in Windsor) we would get a 2 days notice of where to meet him in Detroit with what band he was at at the time......we saw bands we loved to see and even some we didn't care to see but we always went to see Kevin....the Loverboy/Hooters (whatever happened to the Hooters?) was one of the best tours and that was just after the Bob Geldoph record We Are The World came out and then the Canadian record, I forget the name but Mike Reno sang with it among others............we were in Detroit at Joe Louis Arena sitting on the equipment boxes 10 feet away from the stage (best seats in the house, Kevin always wanted us to sit by the soundboard but we liked to see the bands up close) with our Total Access passes on (those are great to have) and the music starts and this drop dead gorgeous guy comes running by us and up to the stage and starts singing one of Loverboy's songs and I'm just looking at him and he had these blue (not red) leather pants on and he just took my breath away and he didn't look like the Mike Reno I saw on Much Music at all, some famous people look the same in person and some don't, well he looks so much better in person, he looks good on t.v. too, but he totally blew me away and I kept asking Kevin who was not on lights I don't know what his job was but he was standing with us and I just was looking at this singer and I said "Is that Mike Reno???"...."no way is that Mike Reno, that's not him it doesn't look like him" and after about 10 times of asking Kevin if that was Mike Reno I think he finally told me to shut up, but I met or saw a lot of famous people through Kevin but Mike Reno was the only one that I wouldn't have known that was him if he wasn't on stage singing with the rest of Loverboy.......and I have a great picture of me and Scott taken back stage but we were at the Ponchotrain Motel in Detroit drinking Dom Perignon with the guys from the 2 bands that Kevin was working for and that was one of the best tours.......I left my autographed programme in the truck that Bob Cheevers (one of the truck drivers for Loverboy) was driving and I was so mad that I lost it and I even sent the money to Loverboy's agency at the time with Bruce Allen to get another one and they never sent me one.............but that interview with Mike, was one of the best I've seen and he is such a nice down to earth guy and he is very funny but it brought back some great memories of seeing Mike Reno and not believing it was him....he's a great singer and how bummed out I was when I heard about Scott being swept into the water off his sailboat never to be found again and how Mike says he thinks about him every day of his life........the picture I have of Scott and I is a funny one and I hope Mike reads this............and I never got my programme back and I sent the money but I wanted it to remember that tour which out of all the ones my friend who worked his way up to be stage manager, that really was a great tour and Loverboy is a great bacd especially live............just wanted to share that story................Lana from Windsor,Ontario.........

Just caught 'Where You At Baby?' and saw a face from my teen years- Mike Reno. He went on to say how Canada has consistently failed to acknowledge LoverBoy for their outstanding contribution to Canada's music history. What a shame! Get it together all you 'powers that be' and do something useful with your power and your time.. induct LoverBoy in to the Music Hall of Fame, today! I am in my thirties now and still listen to their music for they are timeless as is Journey. I anticipate this matter will be addressed with utmost respect and before I expire.. looking forward to the induction!

i am one of the ones who have followed mike and the guys since the early 80's...and yes it is ashame that they haven't recieved the reconition that they are due! the talent that each of them have it amazing! there is not a song that has been put out that i don't have. i have been to TOO many loverboy concerts to count, as a matter of fact my first husband divorced me because i went to one of their concerts on a thursday night in birmingham, alabama and the following saturday went to the same concert in atlanta, georgia...did this bother me? no...cause if he couldn't deal with me and loverboy then he needed to kick rocks...lmao...and we had been together over 7 years...would i do it again? hell yes! the last time i saw them was in 1999 when they played at the city fest in montgomery alabama...they rocked just as hard then as they did in the 80's...i will always support them and love the new album...they will ALWAYS be #1 in my book...rock on loverboy! hurry up and come back to alabama!

I just saw the Mike Reno episode. That Mike is still a cool guy. No attitude or arrogance about him. To this day I have a few Loverboy tunes on my ipod and luv to crank them. I never really called them 80's cheese music. They were consistent with all there music. I saw Loverboy in Kitchener when Bryan Adams opened for them. To this day I remember the lasers and the great light show. They rocked thge aud and everybody loved the show. GET THIS BAND INTO THE HALL OF FAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the show "where you at" yesterday & thoroughly enjoyed it. I have been a LoverBoy Fan since the late 70's early 80's when my girlfriend & I would sit on the front stairs of their Band House in Burnaby & listen to them jam. I love the Band, there music is Timeless. You hear a song today & its fresh & relived. I am sooo shocked that they are not in the Cdn. Hall of Fame, there sound is unique & right-on, always enjoy hearing Loverboy. The show was great, good for Mike Reno, he's so down to earth & a good time regular guy.
