It turns out writing a letter to my body was easier than you might think, but also very emotional. We have been conditioned from a young age to take our physical appearance very seriously and with that comes a lot of pressure. From an early age we create limitations and expectations for our little bodies. We compare, judge and analyze. Often our self esteem is threatened, challenged and shaped by external perceptions, creating an inaccurate and unrealistic sense of self.
What if we took the time to look at who we really are and what our bodies really mean to us? What it can do rather than what it can’t? The strength instead of the weaknesses? The unique beauty instead of differences?

Not too long ago we spent an afternoon asking young women about themselves. Our questions incited intimate conversations that revealed everything from insecurities and fears to hidden talents and philosophies on life. Their hopes, dreams, loves and obsessions all shone through with such charm and truth it was hard to leave the shoot without feeling [...]

How do you thank your ancestors for breathing, dreaming, living and fighting?
How do you thank them for bravery and for love?
How do you appreciate all the creativity, the beauty, the grace, the sacrifice and the wisdom?
How do you take away the pain and push past the indifference?
How do we honour all of that?
How do we make change?

Who are you? How do people see you? How are you different?
In the latest Karma Camera we challenged ourselves to give attention to our own diversity. Not just the colour of our skin or where our parents were born, but also our personal distinctions. Taking back the words, phrases, or derogatory experiences we’ve had that have challenged our diversity. Looking at our own and other people’s past perceptions of us turned out to be dramatic, funny and often painful. I gained an interesting new clarity about how deeply affected I was by social experiences during my formative years and just how far away that seems now. Funny, at the time it seemed like my whole world.

We spent an afternoon asking you very personal, intimate, borderline inappropriate questions on a very interesting topic: RELATIONSHIPS!! We wanted to celebrate beautiful, healthy, diverse, young Canadian relationships and showcase your feelings on the subject. In preparation and as research for our look at the international state of the girl we’ve been thinking a lot about how young girls (and boys) look at and deal with the challenges they face, including relationships (and falling in love!!!!). We understand that all across the world young people are tackling different issues with different sets of values using different resources, so we decided to start the conversation here and now with YOU!

I recently connected with former child soldier, activist and international recording artist Emmanuel Jal while hosting Lt-General Romeo Dallaire’s Zero Force event held at U of T on Human Rights Day. The event included one thousand students from across Toronto and inspired discussion over what actions individuals can take to join General Dallaire’s dedicated mission to complete his brave life mission: to eradicate the use of child soldiers as weapons of war across the world.

I’m excited to show you our next episode of Karma Camera, which was inspired by my thoughts around Western women in relation to our sisters in the developing world. It seems obvious that there are certain issues that women deal with that are in part enabled by their geographic location.

The Karma Camera #1
We spend one stunning fall day last week interrupting girls who were shopping in Kensington Market to give them this pitch:
“We work for MuchMusic and we’re working on a documentary series about the international state of the work which will involve taking Canadian girls to developing nations to explore the global and local issues affecting young women across the world. To support the inspiration and development of the project we’re creating short vignettes’ to support a conversation with our audience and showcase the beautiful, diverse and unique faces of Canada’s young women. Are you interested?

In an age where news travels at the speed of light the question isn’t getting the information. The question is what you do with it once it’s within your consciousness. I’ve been thinking about Pakistan for some time and I have been shocked at the limited amount of media attention this disaster has seemed to [...]

There is something beautiful and fascinating about rediscovering or uncovering a part of you that has been with you the whole time. These are some of the thoughts running through my mind as I spend time attending Manifesto events around Toronto this year. The annual festival of community and culture is back again this year with a jam packed six days of art, music, film, community, change and suggested manifestation in the most magical sense. There are many highlights to this years shows and activities, but as someone who is focused on understanding and exploring the art of storytelling, the screening of Nabil Elderkin’s documentary Bouncing Cats really left a mark over my heart.
