Chris Evans as Captain America. Robert Downy Jr. as Iron Man. Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. Gregg Clark as SHIELD Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Sgt. Nick Fury. And all of these actors directed by Joss Whedon – can life get any sweeter?
At the San Diego Comic Con, the cast of the Avengers movie (set to open in 2012) walked out on stage, and not only revealed Joss Whedon as the confirmed director (up until this point, he was “close to confirming a deal”) but also Ed Norton’s replacement for the Hulk, Mark Ruffalo.
Also starring in the movie (but not at Comic Con) is Don Cheadle as War Machine. Thor and Captain America get their own movies, in 2011 and 2012 respectively (***possible spoiler*** not a huge detail, but the Captain America movie will lead into the Avengers one, as its the Avengers who find him trapped in the ice years after World War II).
Thor also boasts Tom Hiddleston as his nemesis Loki, and Captain America features Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull (and the trailer reveals the movie will also feature the Cosmic Cube). The characters of Nick Fury and Agent Coulson are expected to make cameos in their movies. On top of being origin stories (a la-the first Iron Man and Hulk movies) they are also “tying together” the shared Marvel movie-universe (also a la-the first Iron Man and Hulk movies).
I can’t wait to see them all in costume! It’s a great time to be a fanboy!! And check out this wicked, wicked, wicked image of all of the difference Avengers characters from the comics!
