Miley, Charlie and more!
February 20th, 2014
Following Alex Turner’s rather uncomfortable speech at last night’s Brit Awards, we are looking back at other questionable speeches from all sorts of televised events.
In case you missed it, watch the lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys mumble some pretentious mumbo-jumbo and then ask to be invoiced for the microphone before he drops it, while band mates and presenter just stand there being awkward. Did he let Michael Cera write this speech?
Another awkward acceptance speech comes from Kristen Stewart. Back in 2009 at the MTV Movie Awards she shrugged her way to the podium and then dropped the golden popcorn statue (at the :50 mark). Butterfingers!
The following TMI moment at the Golden Globes is brought to you by Natalie Portman. After winning Best Actress for Black Swan in 2011, a very pregnant Natalie went on about how her co-star and choreographer in the movie “totally wants to sleep with me!” She then went on to cackle uncontrollably for 20 seconds. Ugh.
Before Kanye famously interrupted Taylor Swift, Ol’ Dirty Bastard did the exact same thing but WAY BETTER at the Grammys back in 1998. As Shawn Colvin was announced the winner for Song of the Year, the rapper crashed the stage to rant about his expensive outfit and how “Wu-Tang is for the children!” It’s more hilarious than it is awkward (unless you’re Shawn Colvin).
And way, way, way before everyone raved about Merritt Wever’s short and snappy speech at the Emmys last year, Joe Pesci was actually the founder of the quick quip. When he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1991 for Goodfellas, he just said “it’s my privilege, thank you!” BOOM!
When Justin Bieber tied Drake for an MMVA back in 2011, he definitely stood out after asking out co-host Selena Gomez on live television. This could have been staged, we don’t know! But we do know had Selena said “no”, it would have made for some uncomfortable television.Tweet
