Battle of the “A”-List Brit Soul Sisters

November 19th, 2010

This morning, the New Music Videos team debated whether Amy Winehouse’s newly announced tour dates in Brazil can be considered the official kick-off to her “comeback.”

I’m pretty sure they can. Especially since Winehouse will have some help from kick-ass artists Mayor Hawthorne and Janelle Monaé for the shows. Yes, I’m excited for Amy to get back out there. But, I also think Winehouse better hurry up with that comeback before everyone stops missing her.

When Winehouse dropped off the music scene and became a professional tabloid target, I was all, “but who’s going to sing everything I’m feeling with soulful honesty and blues-filled rage!?” Enter Adele.

While Amy was off gallivanting with that Blake guy and getting in trouble with the law, Adele was filling the British, blue-eyed soul diva void left in the pop charts. They’re both Grammy winners, they’re both charming as hell and they both put out consistently great music. But here’s where Adele one-ups Ms. Winehouse: reliability. It’s frustrating being an Amy fan. There are no concrete plans for a new album. Even the tour dates sound a little sketchy and who knows if Amy will actually show up?

To further prove my Adele trumps Amy point, in the same week news breaks of Amy’s comeback tour dates, Adele drops an instant classic. Coincidence or conspiracy? Adele’s new single “Rolling in the Deep” is nothing short of amazing. The track is more upbeat than her smash “Chasing Pavements” but is no less epic. My productivity is at a low today since I’ve been obsessively listening to this track on repeat all afternoon (shhh don’t tell my bosses).

Adele is set to release her second album this coming February. Amy Winehouse plays her Brazil shows in January. Looks like it’s going to be an interesting winter.
