It’s safe to say my trip to Ethiopia changed my life forever and enriched my life in ways I could never anticipate. I think my experiences there opened my eyes to some harsh realities and inspired me to take more action in the fight for what I believe in.
I think it helped me open my eyes a little wider and better put my life into perspective. It showed me how much I need to learn about international development, aid, politics and government. It inspired me to spend more time in Africa. It also taught me more about making television and the importance and power in telling our stories. All of them.
We did our best to avoid capturing another depressing account of an African nation from a western perspective without any context and with sympathy shy of compassion and reality. We captured our short trip to Ethiopia with Plan Canada so you would see exactly where Canadian donation dollars go, better understand the green famine and meet some of the people living it’s realities every day. The advice I most give to myself and young people is simple: be the change you wish to see in the world. It may be cliche but if it worked for Ghandi maybe it can work for us. I hope to find out.
How do you hope to affect positive change?
