Because I Am A Girl: Make pink lemonade out of life’s lemons

September 25th, 2010

I may be the worlds worst salesman, but I know enough to get me by. For instance, I know that it’s really hard to resist wanting something that you know everybody else wants. Perhaps this wanted thing is completely stranger to you until you see someone else coveting it passionately. Suddenly, this one thing seems like it’s always been there, waiting in the shadows for its chance to take you by surprise and change your whole world.

I recently sold lemonade for Plan Canada’s Because I Am A Girl event in Toronto as part of a campaign to help promote awareness and raise money to help change the lives of young girls in developing nations all over the world.

My involvement with BIAAG began in 2009. I met Olympic medalist Jennifer Heil in Toronto on a day when she happened to be wearing a BIAAG t-shirt while shooting an interview at the MuchMusic studios in support of the same cause. After a brief conversation about how the program has been changing the lives of girls globally I was inspired to take action and have been working with the team ever since. If this interests you, I have a question for you.

If you knew that…

- Of 163 million illiterate youth in the world, 63 percent are female
- Educated women are more likely to resist abuses such as domestic violence, traditions like female genital cutting, and discrimination at home, in society or the workplace

…wouldn’t you want to make a change?
