When you’ve been around for 30 years like Much has, you can bet we’ve seen the rise (and fall) of many new artists.
We can say we were there when a young Britney Spears first charmed the world; when Lady Gaga had her first #1 hit; before Beyoncé literally ruled the world; and when three guys from Seattle had no idea that they’d become the voice of an entire generation.
Oh, and we were also at Ground Zero for the Bieber Invasion. We’ve literally watched JB grow up and make a few mistakes along the way, but we still love him.
But few artists over the past 30 years have been as successful, as controversial, as loved and hated, and as game-changing as Eminem. Slim Shady has become such an important part of both music and popular culture that it’s difficult to remember what the music industry was like before he dominated it.
Every superstar has their “before they were famous” moment and we were there to capture Em’s when he made his first and only appearance at Much headquarters in 1999.
Let’s be honest. Most of us probably didn’t have high expectations for Eminem when we first saw and heard him. A white rapper with a jokey first single and an equally jokey first video. A lot of us probably expected him to be the next Vanilla Ice. Yet as you watch this interview, you quickly see that the qualities that make Em so great, including his passion, drive, confidence, and sense of humour were all there from the very beginning.
It’s not often that you’ll get to see an interview like this, unedited and in its entirety, with one of the biggest superstars of a generation at the start of his career. Here it is, enjoy.
In celebration of Much’s 30th Anniversary we’re going to be looking at plenty of amazing footage, like this first Eminem interview, all month long. Keep up with the great anniversary content on Much.ca and by using the hashtag #ForeverYoung. Our special, 30 YEARS OF MUCH, premieres Saturday, Aug. 30 at 9 p.m. ET.Tweet
