Yesterday morning my friend and I decided we simply HAD to go to Lady Gaga’s concert at the Air Canada Centre. We knew Virgin Radio was giving away tickets every hour and after a million failed attempts we gave up there. Earlier in the day MuchMusic announced that they had “THE VERY LAST PAIR” of tickets and all you had to do was tweet. So obviously, we tweeted (not expecting to win in the slightest). Soon after we gave up calling Virgin we were notified we won the MuchMusic twitter tickets! Completely frantic, I called my friend and told her the news – she didn’t believe me at first – and our Gaga adventure began! Without much time to prepare, we flew downtown to pick up the tickets (again, not expecting good seats) and surprisingly they were floors! We were absolutely thrilled – and shocked!
Skipping ahead a little bit, it’s 8PM and we’re in the venue. Our view was incredible, the floor wasn’t packed, but being short, we decided to stand out of the crowd near the back anyways. People were wearing some outrageous Gaga-fied outfits, including the infamous meat dress, sparkly unicorns, and colourful ballet costumes. To be honest, we were too excited for Gaga and wanted to save up our energy, so we ended up missing the opening act. We heard they were good though!
Gaga was scheduled to grace the stage at 8:50PM and perform for a solid two hours. Nine o’clock came and no Gaga. Nine thirty and still no Gaga. It was already past 10PM and she was nowhere in sight. The sold out crowd alternated between chanting, “Gaga! Gaga!” and booing loudly. Just when everyone was becoming extremely agitated, the lights went down, the show began and people went GAGA.
Despite starting late, the show did run in full – not ending until after midnight.
The show was absolutely fantastic. The sets were out of this world. Her costumes were, as expected, abnormally incredible. Everything went flawlessly from the moment she came on stage. It was rehearsed perfectly. Mother Monster was accompanied by 10-year-old YouTube sensation Maria Aragon from Winnipeg. About half way through the show Maria joined the stage for a beautiful shared version of ‘Born This Way’ – the audience loved it.
Other notable parts of the show included:
• Gaga phoning a member of the audience during ‘Telephone’
• A flaming piano on which she performed a new song called ‘You and I’
• Unexpected stage diving and crowd surfing during ‘Alejandro’
• An enormous monster creature that Gaga challenged during ‘Paparazzi’
• Her firework sparking bra (from the MMVAs) made an appearance
• A rotating silver sphere during ‘Bad Romance’
The show wrapped up with a full out encore version of ‘Born This Way,’ this time including back up dancers and the band, etc. Maria once again joined Gaga on stage for the finale, and at the end bowed alongside Mother Monster.
The Monster Ball was truly unbelievable and inspiring. It is clear Gaga worked ridiculously hard, and obvious she cares a great deal about her fans. By the end, most people had forgotten Gaga was an hour and 10 minutes late – the show honestly made up for it.
Thank you MuchMusic for the incredible experience!
