Billie Joe Armstrong is opening up publicly for the first time about his substance abuse, which culminated in a public breakdown at last year’s iHeart Radio Music Festival. The Green Day frontman shocked fans when he ended the band’s performance by smashing his guitar and screaming obscenities at the audience. In the days following the festival, Armstrong was admitted to a rehab facility for drug and alcohol abuse, postponing Green Day’s tour for their three albums ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré!.
In this month’s Rolling Stone Magazine, Armstrong speaks candidly about his struggle with substance abuse, saying “I couldn’t predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night. I’d wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn’t remember how. It was a complete blackout.”
The magazine, which features Armstrong on the cover, hits stands this Friday.
