Alterna-rock God Billy Corgan recently sat down with Rolling Stone to dish about the Smashing Pumpkins, his critics, his spirituality, and (of course) how awesome he is.

But he also opened up about his supposed love interest, Jessica Simpson – and for the first time, his comments seem kinda heartfelt:

“My goal in life is to love whoever I think is worth loving, and I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do. It’s really simple.”

I think we can all agree that when it comes to truly odd celebrity pairings, Billy and Jessica rank right up there on the WTF scale. 

He’s the super-serious alternative “artiste”, and she’s the dim-witted blonde pop tart who famously didn’t understand the difference between tuna and chicken.   Good thing it’s not 1995, or else Billy would have been run out of town just for being seen with someone like Jessica.

I’m a HUGE fan of the Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan, and his relationship with Jessica definitely threw me for a loop – especially since he famously blamed “the Britney Spears’s of the world” for the break-up of the Pumpkins.  Hooking up with Jess is kinda like sleeping with the enemy, no?

But Billy makes a good point – he’s free to be with whoever he wants, and neither of them really owe us any explanation.  Maybe there really is more to Jessica than we know, and vice-versa.

You know what they say: opposites attract.  Unless, of course, this is all a giant publicity stunt and they’re actually pulling a fast one on us.
