As I slowly and progressively become older I am coming to the realization that a) I am becoming my father b) I will have his hairline in 6 years and counting (which consequently, in case you’re interested, is no hair at all).

These fantastic and equally alarming realizations are especially reinforced on days like today. Why today you may ask? Good question, thanks for asking. Today is my birthday. There. I said it. Today is my birthday!!!!!! I don’t know why, but even since I have been very young I’ve always dreaded that 8th of may. Maybe it was that party in the forth grade which was attended by only 3 people of the 25 invitees (made for an awkward soccer game) or maybe it was the time I ate chicken stuffed cannelloni as a birthday treat, full of goodness, but as it turned out, as well full of salmonella. Ouch. Literally.

I once confided my disdain for my birthday to Beyonce, who looked so puzzled as to why I would hate my one special day, I later read that she received a million dollar car for her birthday the year prior, figures. That, however seems to be the question I’m asking myself; what makes a great birthday? I recently realized I resent inordinate amounts of attention, be it from parents, friends, my girlfriend. That must sound strange coming from someone who makes a living off of that very same fact, however it’s the god honest truth. Whenever I go out, which is rare, I’m always drawn to the back of the room, talking to few people, never wanting to be the centre of attention. It’s being that epicentre of attention for the entire day that drives me crazy. I mean isn’t it much more fun to experience the party rather than BE the party? An experience is much more fun when it’s a shared one. Right?

Right? Maybe Beyonce was right after all. Then again maybe not. Speaking of sharing, she didn’t offer me a ride in her golden car that night in case you were wondering.
