Books That Are Worth Turning Off The TV To Read

August 13th, 2014

Books We're Excited For

We love TV. It’s wonderful. If we had to choose between our left foot and never watching TV again, we would need a new left foot. Some people may say TV addiction is a problem. Those people aren’t watching this season of Nathan For You.

Every once in a while we know the TV needs to have a little snooze and recharge its soundboard or whatever parts make up a TV. Here are a few books hitting the shelves this Fall that we would actually send our TV into momentary hibernation to read.

Why Not Me, Mindy Kaling
Release Date: TBA

Her debut novel Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns) made us wish there was a book club made up entirely of Mindy Kaling novels. This dream will be significantly easier to achvie now that Kaling has announced her second book. Why Not Me, which Kaling credits as her mantra, will cover her life since the release of Kaling’s first book, including the success of The Mindy Project, the death of her mother, and the Vogue cover controversy.

TBA, Billy Eichner
Release Date: TBA

Funny or Die’s Billy Eichner is preparing to write his debut novel, which will hopefully be released sometime in the next year. On the book, Eichner says “I’m very excited to start writing, and I can assure my fans they will love the book more than Shailene Woodley loves Tom’s of Maine. This book is for anyone obsessed with show business, pop culture, social media and lots of other fun topics that fill our days as we hurtle helplessly toward accidents, illness, infidelity and death.” Those are literally all my favourite things in one book.

Yes Please, Amy Poehler
Release Date: October 28, 2014

Do we want a book from the brilliant and hilarious mind of Amy Poehler? Yes please! The SNL alum, Parks and Rec star, Broad City producer and all-around person we want to be friends with so badly it hurts is finally giving us an entire book of her thoughts that we can hold in our sweaty little hands. Yes Please will cover advice on everything from dating to parenting to friendship and we can’t wait.

The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin
Release Date: October 28, 2014

Winter is coming, but Season 5 of Game of Thrones is not. Okay, it is, but not until April. HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO WAIT UNTIL APRIL. *Note, this is a statement, not a question, because questions have answers.* I knew this winter would be a long one. Thankfully, George R. R. Martin is giving us SOMETHING in the form a prologue that will help further explain the world of Westeros. No word on how many boobs and wieners will be featured in the book, but our guess is lots.

Food: A Love Story, Jim Gaffigan
Release Date: October 21, 2014

Comedian Jim Gaffigan introduces his second book by saying “What are my qualifications to write this book? None really. So why should you read it? Here’s why: I’m a little fat. If a thin guy were to write about a love of food and eating I’d highly recommend that you do not read his book.” Works for me.

Veronica Mars (2): An Original Mystery by Rob Thomas: Mr. Kiss and Tell, Rob Thomas
Release Date: October 28, 2014

If the full TV series, first book, and successful Kickstarter campaign-turned movie weren’t enough for you, there is now going to be a second Veronica Mars book. The fandom is real.

Not That Kind of Girl, Lena Dunham
Release Date: September 30, 2014

Every time I hear the title to Lena Dunham’s upcoming debut novel I can’t help but think of the scene from Juno when Ellen Page tells her father she doesn’t know what kind of girl she is. This automatically endears the book to me, and it definitely helps that people like David Sedaris and Judy Blume are already praising Dunham’s work.
