In the late spring, it was announced that Killers frontman Brandon Flowers would be coming out with a solo album titled Flamingo, and now with the summer nearing an end, he’s ready to give it a test run.
Wednesday night Brandon Flowers played a secret Virgin Mobile exclusive show at Toronto’s MOD Club. With no opening band, the audience waited as the venue buzzed with questions of whether the show would be killer, or fall short of past Killers success. Flowers fearlessly took to the stage, and gave us a sneak peak of what’s to come.
Flowers left the feathers at home, and instead was dapper and dressed in a simple rolled up shirt and vest. Backed by a new band full of fresh faces, Flowers seemed comfortable with the new line-up. He began to play us his new songs and we listened.
Brandon Flowers has and always will be a showman, but for this set he toned down some of the over the top theatrics, seeming more relaxed. The vibe of the new Flamingo songs echoes The Killers’ Sam’s Town with the all American anthems. This style fits Flowers the best, as he croons his Las Vegas heart out. Just give his single “Crossfire” a listen, or check out the music video featuring Charlize Theron.
Although the set was a short sneak peak of the new album, Flowers snuck in a few extra treats as well. Midway through his set, he asked, “Do you know this song in Canada?” and began to cover Kim Carnes’s “Bette Davis Eyes”. Adorable? Very. And for the encore? A stripped down acoustic version of “When You Were Young” for the crowd to sing along to.
For Killers fans of Sam’s Town, make sure to check out Flamingo when it comes out this fall, September 14th! Don’t take my word for it? San Sebastian‘s man on vocals aka Mike Veerman was at the concert and said it was one of his favourites. Excited? Here are the Flamingo track listings!
