Bring These Things Back!

When I signed out of my hotmail account today (what? personal email at work? Ssshhhh), I spotted a little slideshow on the MSN page that was all about discontinued items that people would like to see, well, continued. Their list ranged from the great (McDonald’s Pizza, the first Nintendo, Crystal Pepsi), to the curious (the DeLorean DMC-12) to the awful (Olive Garden, Simpson’s department stores).

I thought to myself, “Surely there are more products out there that are long gone that I simply can’t live without.” So I started asking around to my MuchMusic.com co-workers and what erupted was a cacophony of nostalgic excitement that resulted in a breakdown of communication to Kat stating she’ll now make friendship pins for everyone just like she did when she was in Grade 6.

Regardless, I few stand-out long-gone products were voiced and here are the 4 best:

Franken Berry Cereal - the delicious strawberry-flavoured brother to Count Chocula. You can still snag a box or two in some novelty shops, but it seemed to have disappeared off Canadian shelves ages ago. Why? WHY?! (Well, other than the fact that the dye used in the cereal would turn your feces pink, or simply it made your innards bleed - not sure).

Bonkers - The precursor to the inferior Starburst, this chewy fruit-flavoured candy would cause giant pieces of fruit to fall from above, resulting in uproarious laughter. Oh wait - that was just in those creepy 80s commercials.

Jem/He-Man/She-Ra - New episodes of all of these shows are needed. Pronto. They were nonsensical yet they blew my mind. If new episodes started playing, I’d actually get up on Sunday mornings instead of the usual sleeping in til 1pm. (Or I’d at least set my PVR).

Jello Pudding Shaker - This thing was the bomb. You’d add your ingredients, shake, let sit for a few minutes and then serve. Then Bill Cosby would come in and offer me a soda pop. It was the only way I’d eat my pudding.

Honorable mentions - Popples, Boglins, Intellivision, Dweebs, chicken-flavoured Zoodles, and Choclair (both the chocolate bar and the wrapper rapper).

What would you add to this list?

  1. Yes! Bonkers! I LOVED those!

Something that recently came back from my childhood that I’m happy about is Cocoa Rice Krispies.(Although they’re not quite as good as the Cocoa Krispies in the US)

I’d love to see Cap’n Crunch Berries come back too. They still have it in the US!

  2. That is so new for me! hTanks!
