With the Brit Awards hitting MuchMusic on Tuesday, February 21 at 8 pm ET, the one name that’s receiving the most circulation is Ed Sheeran. This laid back 20-year-old singer-songwriter has attracted an impressive fan following, who constantly rave about his hard working demeanor and addictive acoustic folk sound. He’s the sort of guy who would rather wear a hoodie than a suit, and Sheeran’s cult-hit songs like You Need Me, I Don’t Need You, and The A Team, have kept him on everyone’s radar.
His debut album + (that’s the actual title), has landed him four nominations at this year’s award show. Everyone’s eyes will be glued to the redhead’s progress throughout the night, as he hopes to take home the awards for British Male Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, British Single, and MasterCard British Album of the Year.
It’s a no brainer that you should be up-to-date with this Brit. So, here’s five things to know about Ed Sheeran:
1) Sheeran was invited to stay at Jamie Foxx’s house:
At one point, Sheeran had been struggling in the U.K. without much progress. “Sleeping on the same sofas,” he says. But after booking it to Los Angeles, and playing one show on his first night, he ended up getting noticed by Jamie Foxx’s manager. From there, Foxx expressed interest in the 20-year-old’s music, invited him on his radio show and offered him free recording time at the R&B singer’s own home studio. “The last person he did that to was Anthony Hamilton, which makes me feel quite special,” says Sheeran.
2) Sheeran is good friends with Elton John:
You know you’ve got some juice when you have British musical legend Elton John as a mentor. The musician’s Rocket Management represents Sheeran, and Sheeran says he often speaks to John for guidance. “I speak to [him] on a weekly basis,” says Sheeran. “He’s very involved. It’s always good to hear from [him]. He’s a lovely guy and is very passionate about the music.”
3) Sheeran played 312 gigs in one year:
Sheeran read in an interview that James Morrison had performed 200 shows in a year. Ed decided that he wanted to beat that, so in 2009 he managed to perform an impressive 312 times. And when the singer ran out of cash, he went from renting an apartment to renting a sofa at his buddies’ places in London.
4) Ron Weasley is in one of Sheeran’s music videos:
Sheeran’s video for the hit single Lego House starred Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint, who lip synch’s to Sheeran’s lyrics. The video was released on October 20, 2011, and has over 15 million views.
5) Before releasing his debut album, he released 11 EP’s:
The guy’s still only 20-years-old. It would still be impressive if he would have just released an album. But no. He has 11 EP’s too.
