Saturday night, a bunch of the Arts & Crafts men got together for Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew at the Kool Haus.
Now, because it was “Presents Kevin Drew”, I didn’t know what to expect. Would they play all Kevin Drew songs (off his somewhat but not really solo album “Sprit If…”), and no Broken Social Scene songs?! I was happy to see that it was a mix of the both. This being so, a gathering of the Arts & Crafts fam jam were there.
Although there was talk of newly Grammy nominated Feist coming, the show ended up being one of the first all guy shows, however they did not disappoint. Just a few of the people who showed up on stage with Kevin Drew were; James Shaw from Metric (who is so skilled and slick with a guitar I melted), Andrew from American Analog Set, Charles Spearin (also in Do Make say Think), Jason Collett, Brendan Canning, and Liam O’Neil (from The Stills).
The night was a nice combo of “Sprit If…” and past BSS work. Right from the start the energy was high and pumping. After opening with Ibi Dreams Of Pavement (A Better Day) Kevin Drew stated “One of the best things in life, is big openings, and that ladies and gentlemen, was a big opening!” Now, I would tell you the setlist, but as it was taken from me (le tear) I can’t remember the song order, but I CAN tell you that the set included (but not this order):
Cause=Time
Stars and Sons
Farewell To The Pressure Kids
TBTF
F–ked Kid
Safety Bricks
Lucky Ones
Gang Bang Suicide
Fighting Lives
Backed Out On The…
The night also included a new song called Hit The Wall by Brendan Canning, an American Analog Set song, and a cover of Kennel District by Pavement. The set neared the end with an upbeat Major Label Debut (performed TWICE) followed by It’s All Going To Break. The final closing song was a giant singalong to When It Begins with even more Arts & Crafts family on stage! To put it simply, it was a simply lovely finale to the simply awe inspiring show.
