After months of waiting for new music from 2010′s break out star Bruno Mars, the singer, producer, writer and performer has now released his first music video in over a year with Locked Out of Heaven. Serving as the first single off Mars’ sophomore disc Unorthodox Jukebox, due out December 10, (Santa, if you’re reading this please add this item to the list I sent in July) Mars goes back in time to party like it’s 1970.
Produced by the all-star team of Mark Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, Emile Haynie, and Bruno’s writing trio The Smeezingtons, Locked Out of Heaven brings in elements of 1980s pop mixed with synthesizers and 808s. Giving the video an aged look, Bruno performs in a club, hangs out at a house party and throws dice in an alley with friends while clad in 1970′s attire.
Instead of premiering the video on MTV or Vevo, Mars released his first single directly to the fans, telling MTV “It was finished a couple of days ago, [and], you know, a lot of times people want to do a big premiere or something like that,” he said. “But I feel like, with the Internet, I have the luxury to go straight to the fans and say, ‘Here it is.’”
Working with his Lazy Song director Cameron Duddy, Mars describes the video as “just old-fashioned fun. No story line, it’s not me singing to a girl, you get a good sense of what you’re going to get live,” he said. “It’s very VHS-y. I love that man, it takes me back to my childhood, when the tracking is off and the color is off, there’s a beauty in that. You’d have to stand by the TV with, like, aluminum foil all over you.”
Check out Bruno Mars in his new video for Locked Out of Heaven. And don’t forget me, Santa.
