Florence + The Machine @ Mod Club

Musically, there are few things that bring me as much pure joy as the last 30 seconds of Florence + the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over”. But 70 minutes of Florence live in a small venue?! Pure bliss.
Fronted by the completely enchanting Florence Welch, London’s FATM has quickly risen from obscurity thanks to a buzz-building live show and their debut album Lungs. Which, by the way, is a top contender for my favourite album of 2009. Florence writes and sings, the Machine provides the very strong backbone for her powerful, stunning vocals.
Just a couple months ago I found myself routinely scouring FATM tour dates, crossing my fingers for ANYTHING on this side o’ the pond. Sadly, it seemed the schedule was firmly booked through 2009 in Europe. BUT HARK!!! About a month ago, four North American dates popped up, including Toronto! Success!!! And last night I finally got to see Florence in action, AKA one of the best shows I’ve seen all year.

Billy Talent: Live In The Lot Photos!

Did you see that????
Did you see Ben/Ian/Jon/Aaron unleash a rager of a barnburner of a hootenanny on the rabid Thanksgiving crowd?
Did you see the SICK 360 camera we had set up on stage?!
Oh, man. Best Sunday in awhile. (Maybe since the MMVAs, huh? Huh? Huh?). Billy Talent tore through an hour of tunes, and even the chill in the air couldn’t stop Ben from getting sweaty or the crowd from going bananas. Of course BT busted out an army of favourites, from “Rusted From The Rain”, to “Devil In a Midnight Mass”, “Surrender”, “Fallen Leaves”, “Red Flag”, “Try Honesty”, “River Below” (pant, pant) and “Nothing To Lose”. If you missed it, plant your butt in front of ye olde telly tomorrow (Monday) at 5pm ET!

Matt and Kim @ The Reverb

When it comes to writing about shows like last night’s Matt and Kim concert at The Reverb, it’s hard to know where to start… but I guess I’ll just kick off at the beginning. From the moment the cute couple from Brooklyn hit the stage (to some heavy Brooklyn beats), you just knew it was going to be a fantastic amazingly fun show. And it was.
For those of you who haven’t heard of Matt and Kim, you might have heard their music without realizing. Their song “Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare” is that super catchy one in those Community TV promos. They’re kinda like The White Stripes in that it’s just one girl who plays drums (named Kim), and one fellow who plays keyboard (named Matt). What makes them different is that they’re all about having a good time. In their music video for “Yea Yeah” they have food thrown at them. In “Daylight” they jam in those big giant garbage bins. In “Lessons Learned” they get naked in Time Square. So yeah, they like to have a good time.
