California-based indie band Family of the Year wowed audiences at CMW last week and were buzzed about as one of the “bands to watch”. If you’re like me and love bands like Arcade Fire or Fleet Foxes then you will love these guys. We caught up with the band while they were on their way back to the South for SXSW this week. Here they tell us about how the band formed, their love for David Guetta, and the band’s obsession with 90’s sitcom stars. You can check out their new EP “Through the Trees” here.
You guys are from California – what brought you up to Toronto for Canadian Music Week?
Our blue van brought us up there (her name is Buttercup), but really we were itching to get out of LA and on the road before SXSW and it was a bonus that we’d never been to Toronto or even out of the country as a touring band yet.

We caught up with Bahamas (aka Afie Jurvanen) before his ultra-packed Canadian Music Week show on Wednesday. The Juno-nominated singer-songwriter (and Feist’s former guitar player) chatted with us about his new album “Pink Strat”, Gossip Girl and his potential metal side projects with Jason Collett.
Much: How do you think being nominated for a Juno is going to affect your career, if at all?
Bahamas: Well, you know when you’re making records and on tour you don’t really think about that sort of stuff. You just don’t have time. You’re just thinking about you’ve gotta call your mom during sound check and get something to eat. So when they called me last week and told me, I was totally surprised. I think it’ll be a nice moment, if anything it brings more attention to my record. I’m basically busy all the time and I kind of like it that way. I’m always on tour or recording. So yeah, if there’s a few more people who are kind of pointed in that direction of being curious about my music then that’s a good thing.

Family of the Year performing at The Central on March 10th
Well, CMW has officially started and the streets last night were crawling with music fans (despite the rain). I, like most people, had my show schedule carefully planned out so I could make it on time to each of my picks. Unfortunately that plan went down the crapper by about 8:30pm due to some unforeseen ticket/wristband/pass drama at Lee’s Palace.
A last-minute change of plans was made and I headed over to The Central on Markham St. There was a five band showcase called the Factor Breakthrough Sessions happening there, and as luck would have it the bands were actually good!
Here are my reviews:

The Toronto Free Gallery is currently putting on a hip hop exhibit called T-Dot Pioneers: An Exploration of Toronto Hip Hop History and Culture. The exhibit features items from the birth of Toronto hip hop including old photographs, posters, vinyl and awards – even a Juno! The exhibit also coincides with the launch of a new Canadian hip hop website, Northernsidehiphop.ca.
Last week we caught up with Toronto hip hop artist Isis from Thunderheist at the opening of T-Dot Pioneers, and here’s what she had to say about the history of Toronto hip hop and her crush on a certain CNN anchorman.

A little birdie (named Bahamas) told me this afternoon that the Canadian Music Week show at Lee’s Palace tonight featuring Bahamas, Jason Collett and Zeus will actually feature the three acts playing together in one big band. The bands are kicking off their tour tonight as The Bonfire Ball Revue, and from what Bahamas tells us it’s going to be awesome! Each act will take turns singing their songs with the rest of the acts playing the backing band. This is definitely a CMW show not to miss!
The Bonfire Ball Revue: Wednesday March 10th 8pm @ Lee’s Palace, 529 Bloor St. W 19+ All wristbands accepted
