Stuff You Should Listen To!

Listen!

Just in case your iPod is looking a little dry these days, might I recommend some tunes for you to spice things up again?

The Sunshine Underground is one of England’s rising musical talents, after capturing the attention of audiences all over Britain in 2005 when the lads won a BBC Battle of the Bands competition. This four-piece band from Leeds released their first album Raise The Alarm (2006) which contained the incredibly catchy songs, “Borders” and “Commerical Breakdown”. The Sunshine Underground has been M.I.A for the last couple of years much to fans’ disapproval, however are in the midst of making a comeback tour. They have recently released their new EP Everything, Right Now, with their feature track “Coming to Save You”. The full second album is anticipated to be released in February 2010. It’s well worth the wait, so don’t get your knickers in a twist!

Fact: The band named themselves after The Chemical Brothers’ song “The Sunshine Underground”, from the album Surrender.

Sounds like: Franz Ferdinand and the Chemical Brothers’ love-child. TSU produces a variety of punk, dance-rock, funk, and indie sounds.

Canadian Talent + Half Decade = WIN!

Maffoofoo's Top 5

In case you haven’t already noticed, MuchMusic LOVES Canadian bands. I too love Canadian bands. In fact, I truly believe that Canadian bands trump all American, Scottish (-FF), Aussie, and even El Salvadorian bands. I mean, we seriously have so much talent, whether it is recognized worldwide or not.

The point that I’m really getting at is… if you take (in my opinion) the five best Canadian albums of the past 5 years and compare them to some popular albums from the places listed (especially El Salvador), it is clear that we pwn those n00bs. To give you a tasteling of what I mean, I invite you to search up, listen to, and love the best five Canadian albums of the past five years! >:]

Let’s Not Forget About Franz, Mmkay.

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Not unusual for Alex to levitate.

Knowing you/Canada as a whole, you’ve most likely heard “Take Me Out” or “Do You Want To”, two of Franz Ferdinand’s biggest (and what some people would say - only) hits. Nod if the previous statement completely and utterly defines you as a human being in your entirety. Exactly. Nah! - what I’d really like to do is explain why the (incredibly, fantastically) talented band, Franz Ferdinand, is really all that.

Best Album Covers of the Past 10 years?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Gigwise recently posted what they think are “The 50 Best Album Covers of the 2000s”! You can check out all of their top 50 picks, but here are my fave four (with their ranking included)!

santogold-santogold-33
18. Santogold: ‘Santogold’
Maybe it’s just because I love glitter, but I think it really makes this album cover. The more glitter the better I say!

10-animalcollective-merriweath
10. Animal Collective: ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’
Trippy right?! Yeah that’s just a picture! Optical illusions are so confusing but I like them! Downside? Makes my brain hurt if I look at it for too long.

9deathfromabove1979
9. Death From Above 1979: ‘You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine’
Not only is this a fantastic album by a fantastic band (that is now broken up *tear*), but this is a fantastic album cover. Simple looking and simply effortlessly cool. Kinda Andy Warholish too. Rad.

3yeahyeahyeahs-itsblitz
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: ‘It’s Blitz!’
Is is blitz! I don’t like eggs usually as a food, but this cracked egg makes some pretty great art!

And now for my own personal choice that didn’t make the list…
vampireweekendcd2
Vampire Weekend: ‘Vampire Weekend’
This album cover makes me miss Polaroid cameras and the way that they could instantly capture a moment. Also this cover completely reflects Vampire Weekend and their preppy fun good times sound! Woohoo!

What album covers are your faves? Did they make the list?

A lot of movies in the past have been accompanied with a subpar soundtrack however this isn’t the case for Twilight’s New Moon, due out in theatres November 20. The likes of Death Cab For Cutie, Muse, The Killers & Radiohead’s Thom Yorke have all contributed to a soundtrack that is definitely going to be a hit, just like the movie will be.

Full tracklist after the jump.

Vampire Weekend Release New Single

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

vampire-weekend-horchata

Yesterday the guys in Vampire Weekend released the lead single Horchata off their upcoming album Contra. Their sophomore album is set to be released on January 12, 2010.

After listening to Horchata on repeat for a while, it’s safe to say that Vampire Weekend stuck to their roots and produced a track that is catchy and is very good. If this is any indication, Contra should be amazing!

You can download Horchata for free from Vampire Weekend’s website.

New Foo Fighters Song Released

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

foofighters

With a greatest hits album comes a few previously unreleased tracks or new tracks all together and the Foo Fighters are no exception to this. The guys are set to release a greatest hits album in November and have decided to add two new tracks. One of which is called Wheels and has been recently posted on their MySpace.

After a few listens it’s clear that it’s a catchy tune that will probably be played everywhere. Although Wheels is a lot softer in nature than previous Foo Fighters songs, their unique traits are still apparent in the song. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Check out the track listing for their greatest hits album after the jump, it really is great!
